He was nicknamed “the Roadrunner” as he was known for his small size and lightning quick speed. His superior stickhandling skills and powerful shot made him a leading goal scorer with the Canadiens and he was a 10 time Stanley Cup Champion throughout his career. After the retirement of Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer was made captain of the Montreal Canadiens and the quick winger helped lead his team to the cup in both his years as captain. Unfortunately, Cournoyer had back pain and multiple surgeries that forced him to retire early in 1979. He ended his career 4th in the Canadiens all-time scoring behind Guy Lafleur, Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau. Internationally, Yvan Cournoyer represented Team Canada and he was part of the historic 1972 Summit Series, where he scored 3 goals including one in the final game. He was compared to superstar Wayne Gretzky which led to a tough rookie season for the young winger. Half way through the season, Bellows vastly improved leading him to finish the season with 35 goals. In 1983, he was named interim captain for the North Stars making him the youngest captain at the time at 19 years and 4 month. Brian Bellows spent 10 seasons with the North Stars as a leading goal scorer and fan favorite. He was also known for his heavy commitment to charity work and was involved with many different causes including the Special Olympics, MADD and raising drug awareness. In a shocking trade, Brian Bellows joined the Montreal Canadiens in 1992. He had a successful season with the Habs that included 88 points (second highest in his career), and 15 playoff points that helped the Canadiens bring home the 1993 Stanley Cup. Bellows also played for the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Anaheim Ducks and the Washington Capitals. Lanny McDonald is a retired NHL winger that spent 16 seasons playing professional hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and the Calgary Flames. During his career, McDonald scored 500 goals and accumulated over 1000 points. The offensive forward had 3 consecutive 40 goal seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1979. The deal was met with fan protests outside Maple Leaf Gardens. Lanny McDonald was named captain of the Rockies where he only played in one full season before he was again traded. This time he went to his hometown Calgary Flames where he would play for the rest of his career. Playing for the Calgary Flames, Lanny McDonald had some of the best years of his career. The 1982-83 season saw McDonald battling Wayne Gretzky for top goal scorer in the league. He finished the season with 66 goals, just 5 goals behind superstar Gretzky’s total of 71. His 66 goals still stand as highest number of goals in a single season for the Calgary Flames organization. He received the Bill Masterson Trophy for “perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” He ended his career on a high note, winning the Stanley Cup in 1989. Learn More about Dave Keon: Dave Keon was an NHL center most known for his years spent with the Toronto Maple Leafs where he played for 15 seasons from 1960 to 1975. He joined the Leafs at the tender age of 19 and he took the league by storm winning rookie of the year and the Calder Memorial Trophy with 20 goals and 45 total points. He was the Leafs’ leading goal scorer for 5 seasons and one of the best defensive forwards of his time. Dave Keon won four Stanley Cup Championships with the Leafs organization as well as playoff MVP in the 1967 Stanley Cup Final. Despite Dave Keon’s talent and success on the ice, bitter disputes with Toronto Maple Leafs ownership and management saw Keon move to the WHA in 1975. He played for the Minnesota Fighting Saints and Indianapolis Racers before returning to the NHL in 1977-1978 to play alongside Gordie Howe for the New England Whalers (renamed the Hartford Whalers in 1979). Kennedy joined the Leafs full-time in the 1943-44 season where he became part of the Kid Line II, consisting of Howie Meeker and Vic Lynn. The Kid Line II later became known as KLM and Kennedy came out a top goal scorer with the team. Teeder Kennedy helped to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to 3 consecutive Stanley Cups from 1947-1949. He became captain of the Leafs, a title he held for 8 seasons. Kennedy became the first player in NHL history to win 5 Stanley Cup Championships and the last Toronto Maple Leaf to win the Hart Trophy for MVP. Learn More about Bobby Baun: Bobby was an NHL defenseman that played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Oakland Seals and the Detroit Red Wings from 1956-1973. Known for his hard hits, Baun played for the Leafs for 11 seasons winning the Stanley Cup in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967. Baun is best remembered for his performance in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals in the 1963-64 season. Having broken his ankle earlier in the game, Baun returned in overtime and scored the game winning goal, forcing a game 7 which the Leafs won to clinch their third straight Stanley Cup Championship. During the 1967 Expansion Draft, Bobby Baun was selected by the Oakland Seals. Following a disasterous season with the dead last Seals, Baun requested a trade back to an Original Six team. His request was granted and he played another two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Baun was later traded back to the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 1972-1973 season where he only played 5 games before a hit from Mickey Redmond resulted in a career ending neck injury. He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. Although the Islanders reached the playoffs and finals in later seasons, it wasn’t until 1980 that they would bring home their first Stanley Cup. They won 3 more consecutive Stanley Cups, setting a new record for Stanley Cup victories and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Arbour would retire from coaching for an executive position in 1986 although he would once again return to the bench in 1989 to once again coach the Islanders. By the time he retired for good, Al Arbour had coached 1500 games with the same team and won 740 games. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame.
