He was part of the GAG line (Goal a Game) alongside teammates Vic Hadfield and Jean Ratelle. Despite never having won a Stanley Cup, Rod Gilbert is ranked #2 on the all-time list of New York Rangers. He won a Bill Masterson trophy for his perseverance and dedication to hockey. During his junior career, Gilbert slipped on garbage thrown on the ice causing him to break a vertebra in his back which led him to be temporarily paralyzed. He underwent numerous surgeries and played through constant pain. He was a fan favorite that made eight All-Star Game appearances. His number (#7) was the first number to be raised to the rafters by the Rangers. Rod Gilbert was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982. The next season, Rayner was the leading goalie for the Americans final season but then World War II started, and the Americans folded. Rayner spent the next three years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He played two seasons there with the teams based out of Victoria. After the war, Rayner signed as a free agent with the Rangers in 1945. Rayner was the starter goalie in six of the seven next seasons. Although Rayner hadn't set any goals he was still one of the best goalies of his era. 1948-51 were his best seasons as he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's MVP in 1950 after leading the Rangers to overtime in the seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals. He was a rugged enforcer that led the league in penalty minutes with 202. Fontinato had a long running feud with Gordie Howe which culminated in a fight where Howe broke Fontinato’s nose and dislocated his jaw. Howe described the fight as one of the most memorable of his career. Lou Fontinato was traded to the Montreal Canadiens where he spent two more seasons before he suffered a career ending injury after colliding head first into the boards on a missed check. He was paralyzed for a month and did not regain feeling in his arms for four months. Lou Fontinato passed away on July 3, 2016 at the age of 84. Learn More about Pavel Bure: Pavel Bure is an NHL Hall of Famer that spent 12 seasons playing right wing for the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. Known for his outstanding speed he was nicknamed “The Russian Rocket.” He made his NHL debut in 1991 and won the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year, finishing the season with 34 goals and 60 points in 65 games. His rookie year was followed by two consecutive 60 point seasons. Pavel Bure was traded to the Florida in 1999 and in his first two full seasons with the franchise, Bure led the league in scoring, capturing two back to back Rocket Richard Trophies. Bure was traded to the New York Rangers on March 18, 2002. Unfortunately, a series of knee injuries left him unable to play and he announced his retirement in 2005. Bure was voted in on June 27, 2012, alongside Joe Sakic, Adam Oates and Mats Sundin. The Canucks retired Bure's #10 jersey on November 2, 2013.
