Learn More About Derek Sanderson: Derek Sanderson, also known as "Turk", was tough centre who played in the NHL from 1965-1978. Sanderson first started playing with the Boston Bruins full-time in 1967. Sanderson played in 71 games scoring 24 goals and 49 points along with had 98 PIM. Sanderson was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year, an award that had been won by teammate Bobby Orr the previous year. In the 1969-1970 season, the Bruins made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The possible last game of the series went into overtime and Bobby Orr scored the winning goal for the Bruins. People often forget that it was Derek Sanderson who passed Orr the puck for that goal. Sanderson's time with the Bruins made him very popular and in the next two seasons he helped the Bruins finish first in the league and win the Stanley Cup in the 1971-1972 season. Derek Sanderson was offered a multimillion dollar contract by rival league WHA and he went to play for the Philadelphia Blazers. Sanderson was the highest paid athlete in the world at the time with a contract of $2.65 million dollars. However his fast and furious lifestyle was plagued by his battle with addiction. He was unable to remain with any team for very long and had short stints back to Boston, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. Eventually he lost it all and became homeless. With the help of his friend, Phil Esposito, Sanderson was able to get back up on his feet after a stint in rehab. Sanderson now spends his time helping players stay away from what he's been through. He also is an investment specialist at the Boston State Research Company which helps athletes manage their money. Middleton had a strong rookie season with the Rangers but at the end of the second season was traded to the Boston Bruins in what sportswriters called one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player. Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates. Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform. Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill. Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games. He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14. He was a defenseman who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New York Rangers. Stanowski played from 1939-1951. Stanowski was originally drafted by the Leafs in 1939. With them he won four Stanley Cups in 1942, 1945, 1947 and 1948. After his last Stanley Cup win, Stanowski was traded to the Rangers. He played with them until 1951 when he retired. Wally Stanowski passed away in 2015 and at the time of his death, Stanowski was marked the oldest surviving Maple Leaf. A highlight of Stanowski's career besides the Stanley Cup would be the Memorial Cup in 1938. Stanowski was also a part of the All-Star Team in 1941 and played an All-Star game in 1947. He began his career coaching at the varsity and junior levels in 1977. He led the Oshawa Legionaries to back to back championships in 1979 and 1980. Mike Keenan moved on to coaching the Rochester Americans to the AHL championship in 1983. The following year, Keenan got his first high profile coaching job, coaching the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984. He was with the Flyers for 4 years before becoming head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks in 1988 and head coach of the New York Rangers in 1993. In 1994, he led the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup Championship since 1940. Mike Keenan also was coach and/or GM for the St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins and the Florida Panthers. In 2007 Keenan became senior advisor to the Swedish Ice Hockey Association. He was a goaltender that played for the New Jersey Devils, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. Kirk McLean was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 1984. He debuted with the Devils in 1985-1986 before being called to Oshawa. McLean had to compete with many for ice time so he was sent to their AHL affiliate, the Maine Mariners. He was called up from Maine in 1986 and allowed only one goal of 24 shots into the net, letting the Devils win the game. He played a few more games with them before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 1987. With the Canucks, McLean earned his first Vezina Trophy and achieved his first NHL career shutout. In 1991-1992 Mclean earned his next big achievement when he stopped all 45 shots making it his third shutout of the season and the Canucks first against Montreal. In 1994 during a game against the Kings, McLean became a part of history when he let Wayne Gretzky score his 802nd goal making Gretzky the All Time Leading Goal-Scorer. After that, McLean was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. He played with them for a season before being traded to Florida for two seasons. McLean was traded yet again to the Rangers before retiring. In his first season with the NHL, Laprade earned 34 points in 49 games and won the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year. He made four All-Star game appearances throughout his career. Edgar was also a gentleman on the ice going 3 full seasons without a penalty earning the Lady Byng Trophy. Unfortunately, Edgar Laprade never got his name on a Stanley Cup. The closest he got was a heartbreaking game seven defeat in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings in 1950. Laprade hung up his skates in 1955. He was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. Edgar Laprade passed away in 2014 at the age of 94.
