Learn More about Ron Hextall: Ron Hextall was an NHL goaltender that was active in the NHL from 1984-1999, playing for the Philadelphia Flyers, Quebec Nordiques and the New York Islanders. Hextall is a third generation NHL player-the grandson of Hall of Famer Bryan Hextall (NY Rangers) and son of Bryan Hextall Jr. who played in the NHL for 10 seasons, mainly for the Pittsburgh Penguins. His uncle, Dennis Hextall spent 14 seasons in the NHL. Ron Hextall brought a new style of goaltending to the NHL because he liked to come out of the net and play the puck, lending support to his team’s defensemen. Hextall was also a very aggressive goalie which lead to three suspensions of 6 or more games throughout his career. He had more than 100 penalty minute in each of his first three seasons and set NHL records for penalty minutes by a goaltender. Hextall was an excellent stick handler and became the first NHL goalie to score a goal, not once but twice, once against the Bruins on an empty net and again against the Capitals. Ron Hextall played his first four NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. A combination of injures and suspensions let Hextall to be traded to the Quebec Nordiques in 1992 as part of the Eric Lindros trade when Lindros refused to play for the Nordiques who drafted him first overall in the 1991 Entry Draft. Hextall helped the Nordiques reach the playoffs and was again traded the following season to the New York Islander where he played one season before being sent back to the Flyers. Hextall helped the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. At the end of the 1998-1998 season, Hextall was waived by the Flyers and went undrafted in the expansion draft. He announced his retirement on September 6, 1999. After his retirement as a player, Ron Hextall became a Flyers scout and eventually worked his way up to General Manger of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2014. Learn More about Claude Lemieux: Claude Lemieux is a retired NHL winger whose 10 year NHL career was highlighted by four Stanley Cup Championships. He began his NHL career playing for his hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens who drafted him in 1983. He played for the Habs for seven seasons winning his first Cup in 1986. In 1990, Lemieux was dealt to the New Jersey Devils where he shined in the 1995 post season contributing 13 goals to the Devils Stanley Cup Championship winning the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP. The next season he played for the Colorado Avalanche where he won his third Stanley Cup becoming only the 10th player in the NHL to win back to back Cups with different teams. He was traded back to the Devils in 1999 where he won his final career Stanley Cup. Throughout his career, Claude Lemieux had a reputation as one of the dirtiest players in the league. He antagonized the other team and would do whatever it takes to win a hockey game. It is largely believed that Lemieux sparked the bitter rivalry between the Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche during the 1996 playoffs. He checked Kris Draper from behind pushing him head first into the boards leading to a concussion, broken jaw, nose and cheekbones. Tensions rose into the next season between the two teams leading to a bench clearing brawl that culminated in Lemieux being badly beaten by Darren McCarty before officials could remove him. Claude Lemieux retired from the NHL in 2003 although he did attempt a comeback in 2008 where he played for the San Jose Sharks. He was drafted second overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft after superstar Mario Lemieux. Muller was an enthusiastic athlete that put his heart and soul into every game and excelled at the physical play, forechecking and fishing the puck out of the corners. He was a natural leader and was named Captain Kirk by the New Jersey Devils. In 1991, Kirk Muller was traded to the Montreal Canadiens where he quickly became a fan favourite, helping the Habs win the Stanley Cup in 1993. His time in Montreal was short-lived when he was traded to the New York Islanders during the 1994-1995 season. Kirk Muller made it well known that he did not want to play for the Islanders. He reluctantly reported to and played in a handful of games before he walked out on the team, forcing a trade. He was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he was reunited with his former Habs’ coach Pat Burns. Muller didn’t produce for the Leafs as expected as he was slowing with age. He was traded to the Florida Panthers where he became a leader in the dressing room, more so than on the ice where his offensive production was all but gone. Muller struggled in Florida and was traded to the Dallas Stars in the middle of the 1999-2000 season. He became part of the “Grumpy Old Men” line with Mike Keane and John MacLean. After 4 seasons in Dallas, Muller retired at the end of the 2002-2003 season. Following his retirement as a player, Muller returned to the Habs as an assistant coach from 2006 to 2011. Despite some solid performances with the Bruins, Ranford didn’t get the chance to shine until he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in late 1988. Bill Ranford backed up starting goaltender Grant Fuhr and helped lead the Oilers to the 1988 Stanley Cup Championship. The following season, Ranford was again backup for Fuhr but a serious injury left top spot open for Billy Ranford. Ranford proved himself to be a superstar for the Oilers, leading them to their second Stanley Cup Championship in 1990 against his old team, the Boston Bruins. Learn More about Rick Middleton: Rick Middleton was a right winger that played in the NHL from 1974-1988 for the New York Rangers and the Boston Bruins. Middleton had a strong rookie season with the Rangers but at the end of the second season was traded to the Boston Bruins in what sportswriters called one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player. Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates. Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform. Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill. Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games. He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14. His record 105 points in the 1983-1984 season tied Ken Hodges for most points by a right winger for the Boston franchise. He retired from hockey after 1005 regular season games and 988 points. Learn More about Wayne Cashman: Wayne Cashman was an NHL winger that played his entire 17 year career with the Boston Bruins from 1965-1983. The hard-nosed winger was on the formidable line with superstar Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge. His strength was in battling in the corners and forechecking. He also served as enforcer protecting Esposito and Bobby Orr. Wayne Cashman was part of two Stanley Cup winning teams in 1970 and 1972. Wayne Cashman was the last active player from the Original Six Era. He served as captain of the Boston Bruins from 1978 until he retired in 1983. He played in 1027 regular season games with 277 goals and 516 assists. Internationally, Wayne Cashman represented Team Canada and he took part in the 1972 Summit Series. He again served the role of enforcer or “Big Bad Bruin” as he called himself. After he retired as a player, Wayne Cashman served as assistant coach for many years for the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning. He became head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers for one season before being demoted to assistant coach ahead of their playoff run. Learn More About Harry Sinden: Harry Sinden has spent over 50 years as part of the Boston Bruins organization in varying roles starting from player, head coach to general manager, president and senior advisor to the club’s owner. Sinden was a great defenseman but he never played in the NHL. He played defence for the minor team, Toronto Marlboro Bantams and then in the Ontario Hockey League on the Oshawa Generals from 1949 to 1953. After playing with Oshawa, Sinden played six seasons with the Whitby Dunlops who he captained in 1957 when the Dunlops won the Allan Cup. Also he won a silver medal in the 1960 Olympics as part of the Canadian National Men's Hockey Team. Harry Sinden coached minor league hockey for six seasons starting in 1960 and became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1966. Sinden was the youngest coach in the league at age 33 and the team finished with the worst record in the league his first season. Sinden got increasingly better and in the 1969-1970 season, Sinden coached the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Championship, their first in 29 years. Sinden retired from coaching just after the Bruins won the Cup due to his rocky relationship with Bruins management. He was named head coach and manager of Team Canada during the 1972 Summit Series despite spending two years away from hockey. After the successful Summit Series, he was offered the position of General Manager of the Bruins—a position he held for 28 years. Sinden remained with the Bruins as President. During his reign, the Boston Bruins had 30 consecutive playoff appearances. Harry Sinden was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 as a builder.
