He was drafted 7th overall in the 1972 draft. He spent only 11 games with the AHL affiliate before being called up to the Flyers, scoring 30 goals and 34 assists in his rookie season making him a contender for the Calder Trophy. He was part of the power LCB line with Reggie Leach and Bobby Clarke. Barber was driven to become an all-around player for every type of situation. He was part of the Flyers’ “Broad Street Bullies” era but he was never a goon or partook in the violent aspect of the game. Barber along with his LCB linemates played a significant role in the Flyers successful Stanley Cup Championships of 1974 and 1975. He captained the Flyers in the 1981-82 season and part of the following season. Bill Barber’s most memorable career moments came from his time representing Team Canada on the International Ice Hockey stage. He scored the game tying goal in the 1976 Canada Cup vs. the Czechoslovakian team to force overtime and Team Canada’s victory. Unfortunately, Bill Barber suffered from a career ending knee injury that forced his retirement after the 1984-85 season. Although his career ended with only 420 goals and 883 points, Barber’s number 7 was retired by the Flyers in 1990 after he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. After his playing career, the coached the Hershey Bears and was the Flyers’ assistant coach from 1985-1988. He coached the Flyers farm team the Phantoms for 4 years where he won the team’s first Calder Cup in 1998. He won the Jack Adams Trophy in 2001 as the Flyers’ head coach. He was director of Player Personnel with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2002-2008 where he won the Stanley Cup in 2004. He returned to the Flyers in 2008 as a scouting consultant. Learn More about Don Cherry: Don Cherry is best known as the very outspoken commentator on the Coaches Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games. Don Cherry is a strong support of tough “Canadian” type hockey that encourages fighting and physical play. Learn More about Gump Worsley: Lorne John Worsley, better known as Gump Worsley was a goaltender in the NHL who played 21 seasons. Worsley played in the minor leagues for 4 years and didn't enter the NHL until he was 24 years old. He won the Calder Memorial trophy and was the Rookie of the Year, in 1952, when he joined the NHL and played for the New York Rangers. In 1954 he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where he won Most Valuable Player. In 1954, he returned to the New York Rangers as a starting goaltender beating out future star Johnny Bower for the op spot. Gump Worsley spent nine seasons with the New York Rangers before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1963. Gump Worsley's best years were spent with the Montreal Canadiens where he was a part of four Stanley Cup winning teams in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969. In 1968, Worsley went undefeated in the play-offs with 11 straight wins. Worsley retired in the middle of the 1969-1970 due to the team's travel schedule and his fear of flying. Worsley was coaxed out of retirement by the Minnesota North Stars due to their less demanding travel schedule and their sweetened deal of a $500 bonus per win, and $250 per tie and $100 per shut out. Worsley spent four more years in the NHL before retiring at age 44. He was one of the last players to adopt the hockey mask. Upon his retirement, Gump Worsley was third among all NHL goaltenders in games played. He retired with a record of 335 wins, 352 losses and 150 ties, with 43 shutouts, and a goals against average of 2.91. Gump Worsley was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980. He was part of the high scoring "Punch line" alongside wingers Maurice Richard and Toe Black and he led the NHL in scoring twice. In 1945, Elmer Lach was rewarded with the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player. Lach also was the first recipient of the Art Ross Trophy given to the player with the most points at the end of the regular season. Lach won the Stanley Cup three times with the Canadiens. Elmer Lach was a gifted player that had superior speed and passing ability. He was a tough competitor that wasn’t afraid to fight for the puck. Although he sustained many injuries through his career, he often tried to hide it to stay in the game. Lach retired after the 1953-1954 season as the league's all-time leading scorer, having played 664 regular season games, scoring 215 goals and 408 assists for 623 points. After retirement Elmer Lach coached the Montreal Junior Canadiens and the Montreal Royals for two seasons. Elmer Lach was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966 and his number 16 was retired a second time by the Canadiens (the first time it was retired for Henri Richard). In 2017 before the Winter Classic, Elmer Lach was part of the first group of players to be named one of the "100 Greatest Players in NHL history". He was the Leafs’ leading goal scorer for 5 seasons and one of the best defensive forwards of his time. Dave Keon won four Stanley Cup Championships with the Leafs organization as well as playoff MVP in the 1967 Stanley Cup Final. Despite Dave Keon’s talent and success on the ice, bitter disputes with Toronto Maple Leafs ownership and management saw Keon move to the WHA in 1975. He played for the Minnesota Fighting Saints and Indianapolis Racers before returning to the NHL in 1977-1978 to play alongside Gordie Howe for the New England Whalers (renamed the Hartford Whalers in 1979). Dave Keon did eventually reconcile his relationship with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he was commemorated with a statue on Legends Row alongside other Leaf legends. In 2016, Keon’s number 14 was retired by the Toronto Maple Leafs and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986.
