He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. He spent 20 years playing in the minors with only one call up to the Boston Bruins where he played in one playoff game in 1955. He retired as a player but returned to the Rochester Americans a couple of years later. Midway through the season, he began coaching the club and was awarded Coach of the Year in 1972. Having success in the minors, Don Cherry became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1974. He was an eccentric, flamboyant coach that encouraged the physical part of hockey and the team under Cherry’s leadership became known as “the Big Bad Bruins.” He led the team to four straight division championships and in 1976 won the Jack Adams Award for coach of the year. He was also coach of Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. He became a broadcaster in 1980 and he began his tell-it-like-it-is segment Coaches Corner, during the first intermission of hockey games. Vachon entered the NHL as backup goaltender for the Canadiens but his playoff success ensured him a spot on the team roster. Vachon went on to win the Vezina Trophy with teammate Gump Worsley the following season as the lead the team to two back to back Stanley Cup Championships in 1968 and 1969 and a third in 1971. Rogie Vachon was traded to the Los Angeles King where he played from 1971 to 1978 where he celebrated some of the best moments of his career. He was team MVP for 4 consecutive years starting in 1973. He was runner up for the Vezina Trophy in 1975 and he was selected for NHL Second All-Star Team in 1975 and 1977. Vachon was considered one of the best one-to-one goaltenders in his era and he never allowed a single goal on a penalty shot for his entire career. Rogie Vachon was honoured by the Los Angeles Kings as his was the first number retired by the franchise in 1985. Following his retirement as a player, Rogie Vachon continued to serve the LA Kings as GM from 1984-1992. He was interim head coach on 3 separate occasions. Learn more about Wendel Clark here: Wendel Clark was selected first overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft and was converted from defenseman to forward. He quickly became known for his hard hitting hockey, refusing to back down to the toughest players in the league. He racked up 227 PIM during his rookie season and earned himself the nickname Captain Crunch. Clark was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team and finished third in voting for the Calder Memorial Trophy. Clark spent most of his career in the NHL as a Toronto Maple Leaf, and was named captain of the Leafs for the 1991-92 season. The following year, Clark led his team into a playoff spot for the first time in 3 years and the Leafs set team records with 44 wins and 99 points. The Toronto Maple Leafs advanced to the 3rd round against Wayne Gretzky’s Los Angeles Kings with Clark getting a hat trick in Game 6 of the series.
