Pronovost played defense for the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. When Gordie Howe was injured during the 1950 Stanley Cup Championship, Detroit moved up Red Kelly and put Pronovost on defense. Pronovost was a great player and was a member of four Stanley Cup championships with Detroit, his first championship in 1950. Pronovost got his fifth Stanley Cup win with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1967. Marcel Pronovost was considered one of the top defencemen of his era. He was named the alternate captain of the Red Wings by the 1956-57 season. Not only was Marcel Pronovost a great player he was also a coach. He started coaching in 1969. Pronovost was started out coaching the Windsor Spitfires but during the 1972-1973 season Pronovost was head coach of the Chicago Cougars in the WHA. Professionally, Pronovost coached 104 games for the Buffalo Sabres and briefly, he was an associate coach of the Red Wings. After his coaching career, Marcel Pronovost worked for the NHL Central Scouting Bureau but in 1990 he was hired as a scout for the New Jersey Devils. Marcel Pronovost was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a player in 1978. Learn More about Mark Howe: Mark Howe was a professional hockey player that played in both the WHA and the NHL for 22 seasons. He is the son of the legendary Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe and brother of Marty Howe. Mark played left wing for the Houston Aeros of the WHA as linemate to his brother Marty and father Gordie who came out of retirement to play alongside his two sons. The Howes led their team to the 1974 and 1975 Avco Cups—the WHA version of the Stanley Cup. Mark also won the Lou Kaplan Trophy as Rookie of the Year. The Howe family moved to the New England Whalers which became the Hartford Whalers when the WHA and NHL merged. The Howes played one more season together in the NHL. Mark Howe was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1982 and by then he had become a full-time defenseman. The 1985-1986 season was a career season for Mark where he put up some of the best numbers ever by an NHL defenseman with 24 goals and 58 assists for 82 points. Despite Mark Howe’s contribution, the injury riddled Flyers were not playoff contenders. After the 1991-1992 season, Mark Howe signed with the Detroit Red Wings, his father’s former team in the hopes of winning a Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, the Red Wings were swept by the New Jersey Devils in the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals. Following his retirement as a player, Howe remained with the Detroit Red Wings as a video coach and pro scout, earning Stanley Cup rings in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. Mark Howe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011 and is the second father-son duo in hockey history to receive the honor after Bobby and Brett Hull. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971. His first two years in the NHL were played with the Detroit Red Wings before a trade for Terry Sawchuk landed Bucyk in a Bruins uniform in 1957. He became part of the Uke Line with fellow Canadian-Ukranian born players Vic Stasiuk and Bronco Horvath who were his linemates on the Junior Edmonton Oil Kings. Johnny Bucyk set numerous records with the Bruins although some have since been surpassed by Ray Bourque including most seasons, most games, goals, assists and points. Bucyk ended his career as the 4th leading goal scorer in NHL history at the time with 545 goals. He appeared in seven All-Star Games and was the recipient of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship and the Lester B. Pearson Award for his contribution to hockey. He is best known for his time spent in Montreal when he established himself as one of the “Big Three” defenseman including Serge Savard and Larry Robinson. The “Big Three” were a key component to the Habs winning the Stanley Cup six times in 1971, 1973, 1976-1979. Guy Lapointe was an all-around defenseman that excelled in checking but also had a lethal slapshot. He was often used on the powerplay. He only spent two seasons with St. Louis and one with the Boston Bruins before announcing his retirement. Internationally, Guy Lapointe represented Team Canada and was chosen to play in the famous 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. He played again in the 1976 Canada Cup. Lapointe finished his career after playing 884 regular season games with 622 points, including 171 goals and 451 assists. He still holds the record for most goals for any Montreal defensemen with 28 and most goals for a rookie defenseman with 15. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. Learn More about Denis Savard: Hockey Legend Denis Savard played 17 seasons in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning. Savard was a natural at hockey, his passion for the game began the first time he put on skates at the tender age of 5. He played for the Montreal Juniors by age 16 and centered one of the best junior lines, “Les Trois Denis” with Denis Cyr and Denis Tremblay as his wingers, they scored 158, 126 and 82 points respectively in their second year of play, including a combined 155 goals. Denis Savard won league MVP and it was expected for him to chosen first overall in the NHL Entry Draft by hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens.
