Federov could do it all: he had superior speed, excellent puck handling skills and was a gifted playmaker. He normally played as a forward but also could play defense if needed. He began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1990. He very quickly became a fan favorite with his extraordinary skills and high scoring. The 1993-1994 season was a career season for Federov where he scored 56 goals and 120 points. In the mid-nineties, Detroit coach Scotty Bowman put Federov on the Russian Five line with Vyacheslav Kozlov and Igor Larionov as wingers and Slava Fetisov and Vladimir Konstantinov on defence. This highly effective line essential shut down the opposing teams’ offense and they played a leading role in the three Red Wings Stanley Cup Championships in 1997, 1998 and 2002.
