Learn More about Ray Bourque: Ray Bourque was drafted 8th overall in 1979 by the Boston Bruins, for which he played for 21 seasons as a defenceman. Bourque made an immediate impact with the Bruins during his rookie season. He was known as one of the best defensemen in the NHL, not only for his defensive skills but also for his ability to score goals. He finished his rookie season with 65 points, a record for a rookie defenceman at the time. He won the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the year and a First Team All-Star selection. In 1985, Bourque and Rick Middleton were made co-captains for the Bruins. Bourque would wear the “C” to away games, while Middleton would captain at home. After Middleton retired in 1988, Bourque became sole captain of the Boston Bruins and would hold the position throughout his tenure with the team, becoming the longest serving team captain in NHL history. Despite Bourque’s achievements and success during his 21 seasons with the Boston Bruins, his team had fallen short of a Stanley Cup win. The Bruins made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in both 1988 and 1990, where they were defeated both times to the Edmonton Oilers. The 1990 were difficult years for the Bruins and Bourque requested a trade during the 1999-2000 seasons when the Bruins fell to last place in their division. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, in the hopes of capturing the elusive Cup. Ray Bourque arrived in Colorado and quickly became a positive force both on and off the ice, helping to improve his team and capturing the division title. Unfortunately, they were defeated in Game 7 of the Conference final by the Dallas Stars. Bourque returned for his only full season with Colorado where he was named alternate captain. After 22 seasons in the NHL, Ray Bourque and his Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in Game 7 against the New Jersey Devils. After team captain, Joe Sakic, took the Cup, he immediately handed it to Bourque (without hoisting it), so Bourque could take the first victory lap around the ice. Lanny McDonald is a retired NHL winger that spent 16 seasons playing professional hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and the Calgary Flames. During his career, McDonald scored 500 goals and accumulated over 1000 points. The offensive forward had 3 consecutive 40 goal seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1979. The deal was met with fan protests outside Maple Leaf Gardens. Lanny McDonald was named captain of the Rockies where he only played in one full season before he was again traded. This time he went to his hometown Calgary Flames where he would play for the rest of his career. Playing for the Calgary Flames, Lanny McDonald had some of the best years of his career. The 1982-83 season saw McDonald battling Wayne Gretzky for top goal scorer in the league. He finished the season with 66 goals, just 5 goals behind superstar Gretzky’s total of 71. His 66 goals still stand as highest number of goals in a single season for the Calgary Flames organization. He received the Bill Masterson Trophy for “perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” He ended his career on a high note, winning the Stanley Cup in 1989. His jersey number 9, was the first to be retired by the Calgary Flames. As well, Lanny McDonald was the first Calgary Flame to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. After 9 seasons Chris Pronger was traded to the Edmonton Oilers where he would play for only one season, leading his team to the Stanley Cup Finals. The following season, Pronger was traded to the Anaheim Ducks where he was also named team captain, leading his team to the Stanley Cup Championship. In June 2009, Chris Pronger was again traded to the Philadelphia Flyers where they would reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010. Pronger was made captain in 2011 but by mid-December he was suffering post-concussion syndrome and problems with his right eye after being hit by a stick earlier in the season. He would never again return to the ice. Although his contract was traded to the Arizona Coyotes, he is not expected to play for the team. Chris Pronger was named to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 after playing in 1167 regular season NHL games with 157 goals, 541 assists and 1590 in penalty minutes.
