Learn More about Andy Bathgate: Andy Bathgate was an elite right winger and top NHL goal scorer that played predominantly for the New York Rangers as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. He entered the NHL in 1952 despite a horrific knee injury suffered in minor leagues and played all but 5 games in 11 seasons for the Rangers. He was an excellent skater, easily weaving his way through the opposing team and he had one of the hardest shots in the league. During a Rangers game vs. the Montreal Canadiens, Bathgate took a slapshot that hit goaltender Jacques Plante in the face which required stitches. When he returned to the game, Plante wore the first goalie mask in an NHL game. In the 1963-64 season, Andy Bathgate was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he helped the Leafs win the Stanley Cup. The following year, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings where he helped lead them to the Stanley Cup Finals. He also played one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins before joining the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where they won two consecutive Lester Patrick Cups. In 1978, Andy Bathgate was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame. On February 22, 2009, Andy Bathgate’s #9 was raised to the rafters by the New York Rangers. He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. Although the Islanders reached the playoffs and finals in later seasons, it wasn’t until 1980 that they would bring home their first Stanley Cup. They won 3 more consecutive Stanley Cups, setting a new record for Stanley Cup victories and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Arbour would retire from coaching for an executive position in 1986 although he would once again return to the bench in 1989 to once again coach the Islanders. By the time he retired for good, Al Arbour had coached 1500 games with the same team and won 740 games. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame. Learn More about Bobby Baun: Bobby was an NHL defenseman that played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Oakland Seals and the Detroit Red Wings from 1956-1973. Known for his hard hits, Baun played for the Leafs for 11 seasons winning the Stanley Cup in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967. Baun is best remembered for his performance in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals in the 1963-64 season. Having broken his ankle earlier in the game, Baun returned in overtime and scored the game winning goal, forcing a game 7 which the Leafs won to clinch their third straight Stanley Cup Championship. During the 1967 Expansion Draft, Bobby Baun was selected by the Oakland Seals. Following a disasterous season with the dead last Seals, Baun requested a trade back to an Original Six team. His request was granted and he played another two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Baun was later traded back to the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 1972-1973 season where he only played 5 games before a hit from Mickey Redmond resulted in a career ending neck injury. Lanny McDonald is a retired NHL winger that spent 16 seasons playing professional hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and the Calgary Flames. During his career, McDonald scored 500 goals and accumulated over 1000 points. The offensive forward had 3 consecutive 40 goal seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1979. The deal was met with fan protests outside Maple Leaf Gardens. Lanny McDonald was named captain of the Rockies where he only played in one full season before he was again traded. This time he went to his hometown Calgary Flames where he would play for the rest of his career. Playing for the Calgary Flames, Lanny McDonald had some of the best years of his career. The 1982-83 season saw McDonald battling Wayne Gretzky for top goal scorer in the league. He finished the season with 66 goals, just 5 goals behind superstar Gretzky’s total of 71. His 66 goals still stand as highest number of goals in a single season for the Calgary Flames organization. He received the Bill Masterson Trophy for “perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” He ended his career on a high note, winning the Stanley Cup in 1989. Learn More about Elmer Lach: Elmer Lach was a great centre that played 14 seasons in the NHL all of which were with the Montreal Canadiens. Lach joined the NHL in 1940 and retired in 1954. He was part of the high scoring "Punch line" alongside wingers Maurice Richard and Toe Black and he led the NHL in scoring twice. In 1945, Elmer Lach was rewarded with the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's Most Valuable Player. Lach also was the first recipient of the Art Ross Trophy given to the player with the most points at the end of the regular season. Lach won the Stanley Cup three times with the Canadiens. Elmer Lach was a gifted player that had superior speed and passing ability. He was a tough competitor that wasn’t afraid to fight for the puck. Although he sustained many injuries through his career, he often tried to hide it to stay in the game. Lach retired after the 1953-1954 season as the league's all-time leading scorer, having played 664 regular season games, scoring 215 goals and 408 assists for 623 points. After retirement Elmer Lach coached the Montreal Junior Canadiens and the Montreal Royals for two seasons. Elmer Lach was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966 and his number 16 was retired a second time by the Canadiens (the first time it was retired for Henri Richard). In 2017 before the Winter Classic, Elmer Lach was part of the first group of players to be named one of the "100 Greatest Players in NHL history".
