Learn More about Paul Henderson: Paul Henderson was a right winger that played in both the NHL and WHA for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Flames and the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls of the WHA. His playing career lasted from 1969 to 1981. Henderson was a consistent hockey player with quick feet and a hard shot and this led him to be chosen to the 1972 Summit Series. The 1972 Summit Series was an eight game series between two great hockey nations, Canada and the Soviet Union. Taking place during the cold war era, the series was not just a battle on the ice but a battle of ideologies and a stand against communism. This series was a life changing event for Paul Henderson who scored the game winning goal in the last three games of the series. Henderson scored “the goal” in game 8 with only 34 seconds to play to win the series for Canada. Paul Henderson became a national hero. He was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and in 2005 with the 1972 Summit Series team. He has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame as well as becoming a member of Ontario’s Sports Hall of Fame. He was given the Order of Canada in 2012. Learn More About Milt Schmidt: Milt Schmidt was a great centre who played 16 years in the NHL, from 1936-1942 and 1945-1955. Schmidt played junior hockey with his two friends Woody Dumart and Bobby Bauer until their rights were acquired by the Boston Bruins. Although Schmidt's rights were acquired in 1935, he did not start to play with the Bruins until 1937. Even in the NHL, Schmidt, Dumart and Bauer still played with each other and they formed the mighty Kraut Line. The Kraut Line was key factor to the Bruins success, and they won a Stanley Cup in 1939. The next year was one of Schmidt’s greatest seasons as he came out leading the league in scoring, he guided the Bruins to another first place and the team finished with the third most goals in team history. Schmidt also won another Stanley Cup in 1941. Schmidt missed three seasons after this because he, Dumart and Bauer enlisted in the Canadian Military during World War II from 1942-1945. However, before going overseas Schmidt played with Ottawa on the RCAF team and won the Allan Cup. Schmidt came back to the NHL in 1946 and he proved he was still a skilled goal scorer, finishing fourth in the league in scoring in 1947. He won the Hart Trophy for league MVP and was named captain of the Bruins in 1951. He retired part way through the 1954-1955 season to become coach of the Boston Bruins. He coached the Bruins for 11 seasons before becoming the team's General Manager. He won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 as a Manager. He later became the general manager of Washington Capitals in 1974. Milt Schmidt was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961. He passed away in January 2017 at the age of 98. Learn More About Mike Vernon: Mike Vernon was a young goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the NHL playing for the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Hose Sharks and the Florida Panthers. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played a few seasons with the Flames and was named one of the best goaltenders in that era. He was drafted second overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft after superstar Mario Lemieux. Muller was an enthusiastic athlete that put his heart and soul into every game and excelled at the physical play, forechecking and fishing the puck out of the corners. He was a natural leader and was named Captain Kirk by the New Jersey Devils. In 1991, Kirk Muller was traded to the Montreal Canadiens where he quickly became a fan favourite, helping the Habs win the Stanley Cup in 1993. His time in Montreal was short-lived when he was traded to the New York Islanders during the 1994-1995 season. Kirk Muller made it well known that he did not want to play for the Islanders. He reluctantly reported to and played in a handful of games before he walked out on the team, forcing a trade. He was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he was reunited with his former Habs’ coach Pat Burns. Muller didn’t produce for the Leafs as expected as he was slowing with age. He was traded to the Florida Panthers where he became a leader in the dressing room, more so than on the ice where his offensive production was all but gone. Muller struggled in Florida and was traded to the Dallas Stars in the middle of the 1999-2000 season. He became part of the “Grumpy Old Men” line with Mike Keane and John MacLean. After 4 seasons in Dallas, Muller retired at the end of the 2002-2003 season. Following his retirement as a player, Muller returned to the Habs as an assistant coach from 2006 to 2011. He was a coach of the Carolina Hurricanes from 2011-2014 and assistant coach of the St. Louis Blues from2014-2016. He is currently an associate coach of the Montreal Canadiens.
