Learn More about Paul Henderson: Paul Henderson was a right winger that played in both the NHL and WHA for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Flames and the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls of the WHA. His playing career lasted from 1969 to 1981. Henderson was a consistent hockey player with quick feet and a hard shot and this led him to be chosen to the 1972 Summit Series. The 1972 Summit Series was an eight game series between two great hockey nations, Canada and the Soviet Union. Taking place during the cold war era, the series was not just a battle on the ice but a battle of ideologies and a stand against communism. This series was a life changing event for Paul Henderson who scored the game winning goal in the last three games of the series. Henderson scored “the goal” in game 8 with only 34 seconds to play to win the series for Canada. Paul Henderson became a national hero. He was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and in 2005 with the 1972 Summit Series team. He has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame as well as becoming a member of Ontario’s Sports Hall of Fame. He was given the Order of Canada in 2012. Learn More About Milt Schmidt: Milt Schmidt was a great centre who played 16 years in the NHL, from 1936-1942 and 1945-1955. Schmidt played junior hockey with his two friends Woody Dumart and Bobby Bauer until their rights were acquired by the Boston Bruins. Although Schmidt's rights were acquired in 1935, he did not start to play with the Bruins until 1937. Even in the NHL, Schmidt, Dumart and Bauer still played with each other and they formed the mighty Kraut Line. The Kraut Line was key factor to the Bruins success, and they won a Stanley Cup in 1939. The next year was one of Schmidt’s greatest seasons as he came out leading the league in scoring, he guided the Bruins to another first place and the team finished with the third most goals in team history. Schmidt also won another Stanley Cup in 1941. Schmidt missed three seasons after this because he, Dumart and Bauer enlisted in the Canadian Military during World War II from 1942-1945. However, before going overseas Schmidt played with Ottawa on the RCAF team and won the Allan Cup. Schmidt came back to the NHL in 1946 and he proved he was still a skilled goal scorer, finishing fourth in the league in scoring in 1947. He won the Hart Trophy for league MVP and was named captain of the Bruins in 1951. He retired part way through the 1954-1955 season to become coach of the Boston Bruins. He coached the Bruins for 11 seasons before becoming the team's General Manager. He won the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 as a Manager. He later became the general manager of Washington Capitals in 1974. Milt Schmidt was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961. He passed away in January 2017 at the age of 98. Learn More About Mike Vernon: Mike Vernon was a young goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the NHL playing for the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Hose Sharks and the Florida Panthers. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season, he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played a few seasons with the Flames and was named one of the best goaltenders in that era. He began his career coaching at the varsity and junior levels in 1977. He led the Oshawa Legionaries to back to back championships in 1979 and 1980. Mike Keenan moved on to coaching the Rochester Americans to the AHL championship in 1983. The following year, Keenan got his first high profile coaching job, coaching the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984. He was with the Flyers for 4 years before becoming head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks in 1988 and head coach of the New York Rangers in 1993. In 1994, he led the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup Championship since 1940. He played right wing in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Phoenix Coyotes. With these teams Gartner played a total of 19 seasons. Gartner was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1979 and made his debut that year in October against the Buffalo Sabres. 1979-1980 was a solid season for Gartner. When Gartner was traded in 1989, he left Washington as the all-time leader in career goals, assists and points. As of 2017, Gartner is third in goals and points and fourth in assists. Despite Gartner being a skillful player, he only lasted one season with Minnesota before he was traded to the Rangers. Gartner scored 11 goals and 16 points in the remaining 12 regular season games. The next season, 1990-1991, Gartner became the first player to reach his 500th goal, 500th assist and 100th point all in one season. The next season he became the first Ranger to score at least 40 goals in 3 consecutive seasons. Gartner was traded again in 1993-1994 to the Leafs. He played with them until 1996 when he was traded to the Coyotes before he retired, two seasons later.
