He was offered a minor league pro contract at the age of 15 that was turned down by his family. He was also offered an NHL “C-form” contract by the general manager of the Montreal Canadiens-a standard contract that would have required Beliveau to join the Canadiens at a set date and salary. Again, his father refused to sign, instead signing a “B-form,” agreeing to play for Montreal if he decided to turn pro. Despite his success in the amateur Quebec Senior Hockey League (QSHL) and two brief appearances for the Canadiens in 1950 and the 1952-53, Beliveau was reluctant to play professionally. Habs GM desperately wanted Beliveau, a leading scorer in the amateur league, to play full-time for the Habs. The Canadiensowners, bought the QSHL and converted it from an amateur to minor pro league, forcing Beliveau to join the Canadiens for the 1953-54 season due to the previously signed “B-form.” Jean Beliveau spent the next 18 seasons with the Canadiens and was a crucial part of their success. Beliveau was a lightning fast skater, talented stickhandler and brilliant playmaker who could also score with his accurate and powerful shots on net. He became an instant fan favorite, all around team player and one of the greatest captains in league history. He played on 10 Stanley Cup winning teams, winning 5 consecutive Cups from 1956-1960. He was team captain for his last 10 seasons, the longest tenure of any captain in club history. Beliveauwas known as a gentleman both on and off the ice, leading by example, he was a mentor to new players and a valued confidant to veterans. Highly respected in the hockey world, Beliveau was the game’s greatest role model. After his retirement, he devoted his energy to helping those less fortunate through several charities. In 1971,Beliveau won his 10th Stanley Cup and his number 4 was retired on October 4, 1971. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived the three year waiting period and inducted Beliveau in 1972. Sadly, Mr. Jean Beliveau passed away on December 2, 2014 at the age of 83.

Learn More About Harry Sinden: Harry Sinden has spent over 50 years as part of the Boston Bruins organization in varying roles starting from player, head coach to general manager, president and senior advisor to the club’s owner. Sinden was a great defenseman but he never played in the NHL. He played defence for the minor team, Toronto Marlboro Bantams and then in the Ontario Hockey League on the Oshawa Generals from 1949 to 1953. After playing with Oshawa, Sinden played six seasons with the Whitby Dunlops who he captained in 1957 when the Dunlops won the Allan Cup. Also he won a silver medal in the 1960 Olympics as part of the Canadian National Men's Hockey Team. Harry Sinden coached minor league hockey for six seasons starting in 1960 and became head coach of the Boston Bruins in 1966. Sinden was the youngest coach in the league at age 33 and the team finished with the worst record in the league his first season. Sinden got increasingly better and in the 1969-1970 season, Sinden coached the Bruins to the Stanley Cup Championship, their first in 29 years. Sinden retired from coaching just after the Bruins won the Cup due to his rocky relationship with Bruins management. He was named head coach and manager of Team Canada during the 1972 Summit Series despite spending two years away from hockey. After the successful Summit Series, he was offered the position of General Manager of the Bruins—a position he held for 28 years. Sinden remained with the Bruins as President. During his reign, the Boston Bruins had 30 consecutive playoff appearances. Harry Sinden was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 as a builder. Learn More about Gump Worsley: Lorne John Worsley, better known as Gump Worsley was a goaltender in the NHL who played 21 seasons. Worsley played in the minor leagues for 4 years and didn't enter the NHL until he was 24 years old. He won the Calder Memorial trophy and was the Rookie of the Year, in 1952, when he joined the NHL and played for the New York Rangers. In 1954 he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where he won Most Valuable Player. In 1954, he returned to the New York Rangers as a starting goaltender beating out future star Johnny Bower for the top spot. Gump Worsley spent nine seasons with the New York Rangers before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1963. Gump Worsley's best years were spent with the Montreal Canadiens where he was a part of four Stanley Cup winning teams in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969. In 1968, Worsley went undefeated in the playoffs with 11 straight wins. Worsley retired in the middle of 1969-1970 due to the team's travel schedule and his fear of flying. Worsley was coaxed out of retirement by the Minnesota North Stars due to their less demanding travel schedule and their sweetened deal of a $500 bonus per win, and $250 per tie and $100 per shutout. Worsley spent four more years in the NHL before retiring at age 44. He was one of the last players to adopt the hockey mask. Upon his retirement, Gump Worsley was third among all NHL goaltenders in games played. He retired with a record of 335 wins, 352 losses, and 150 ties, with 43 shutouts, and goals against average of 2.91. Gump Worsley was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980. He won the Stanley Cup five times in his career in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990 with the Oilers and 1994 with the Rangers. Esa Tikkanen was originally drafted in 1983 by the Edmonton Oilers. Tikkanen's first game in the NHL was the second game of the 1985 Stanley Cup Playoffs. By playing in this one game, Tikkanen was eligible to have his name put on the Stanley Cup before his career even began. Tikkanen played with the Oilers until 1991. After this his career was a bit jumpy. In 1993, he was traded to the Rangers for a season. He was then traded to the St. Louis Blues where he played 11 games when he was traded to the New Jersey Devils. In 1996-1997, Tikkanen was traded yet again to the Rangers. In the summer of 1997 Tikkanen became a free agent but soon signed a contract with the Panthers which was also a short stay as he was traded to the Capitals. Laprade was known for his determination and strong work ethic and was nicknamed “the Beaver” by his teammates. In his first season with the NHL, Laprade earned 34 points in 49 games and won the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year. He made four All-Star game appearances throughout his career. He played in the NHL and WHA as a goaltender. During his career, Mio played for the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and the Indianapolis Racers. Mio first put himself on the map for professional hockey when he decided to join the Colorado College from 1972-1976. During that time Mio became a standout as he won first and second all-star awards. He also made the NCAA west first all-American team two years in a row. In 1974, Mio was officially drafted by the Blackhawks and the Blazers of the WHA but he played with neither and spent most of his time playing with smaller teams until he went to the Indianapolis Racers. In Alberta, Mio got his first NHL action and had his first winning season in 1980-1981 before being traded again to the Rangers. With New York Mio backstopped the Rangers for two seasons, then he was traded to Detroit for a season before retiring in 1986. He played for the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings. Ed Giacomin overcame many obstacles on his journey to the NHL. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971.
