He was a defenseman that played for the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Rangers. Kevin Lowe was originally drafted in 1979 by the Edmonton Oilers. He played 13 full seasons with them. Lowe helped the Oilers win 5 Stanley Cups and was the Team Captain in 1991-1992. In December of 1992, Lowe was traded to the Rangers. In 1994, Lowe and six other ex-Oilers helped the Rangers win a Stanley Cup. In 1996 Lowe rejoined the Oilers. Lowe started the 1997-1998 season with them but was forced to retire due to an inner ear infection that affected his balance. Although he retired, Lowe quickly joined the Oilers staff. Some of the highlights of his career would be that he was the manager for the 2004 World Cup of Hockey Team and he also managed Team Canada at the World Hockey Championships. During his career, Kevin Lowe played 1,254 regular season games, scoring 84-347-431 with a total of 1,498 penalty minutes. He also participated in 214 playoff games, scoring 10-48-58 and 192 penalty minutes. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played a few seasons with the Flames and was named one of the best goaltenders in that era. He began his NHL career playing for his hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens who drafted him in 1983. He played for the Habs for seven seasons winning his first Cup in 1986. In 1990, Lemieux was dealt to the New Jersey Devils where he shined in the 1995 post season contributing 13 goals to the Devils Stanley Cup Championship winning the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP. The next season he played for the Colorado Avalanche where he won his third Stanley Cup becoming only the 10th player in the NHL to win back to back Cups with different teams. He was traded back to the Devils in 1999 where he won his final career Stanley Cup. Throughout his career, Claude Lemieux had a reputation as one of the dirtiest players in the league. He antagonized the other team and would do whatever it takes to win a hockey game. It is largely believed that Lemieux sparked the bitter rivalry between the Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche during the 1996 playoffs. He checked Kris Draper from behind pushing him head first into the boards leading to a concussion, broken jaw, nose and cheekbones. Tensions rose into the next season between the two teams leading to a bench clearing brawl that culminated in Lemieux being badly beaten by Darren McCarty before officials could remove him. Claude Lemieux retired from the NHL in 2003 although he did attempt a comeback in 2008 where he played for the San Jose Sharks. Learn More about Eddie Giacomin: Ed Giacomin was an NHL goaltender that played during the Original Six Era from 1965 when he made it to the big league to 1978. He played for the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings. Ed Giacomin overcame many obstacles on his journey to the NHL. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971. Giacomin spent his last three years as a player with the Detroit Red Wings before retiring in 1978. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987 and his number 1 jersey was retired by the Rangers in 1989. The “Big Three” were a key component to the Habs winning the Stanley Cup six times in 1971, 1973, 1976-1979. Guy Lapointe was an all-around defenseman that excelled in checking but also had a lethal slapshot. He was often used on the powerplay. He only spent two seasons with St. Louis and one with the Boston Bruins before announcing his retirement. Internationally, Guy Lapointe represented Team Canada and was chosen to play in the famous 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. He played again in the 1976 Canada Cup. Lapointe finished his career after playing 884 regular season games with 622 points, including 171 goals and 451 assists. He still holds the record for most goals for any Montreal defensemen with 28 and most goals for a rookie defenseman with 15. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. He was drafted second overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft after superstar Mario Lemieux. Muller was an enthusiastic athlete that put his heart and soul into every game and excelled at the physical play, forechecking and fishing the puck out of the corners. He was a natural leader and was named Captain Kirk by the New Jersey Devils. In 1991, Kirk Muller was traded to the Montreal Canadiens where he quickly became a fan favourite, helping the Habs win the Stanley Cup in 1993. His time in Montreal was short-lived when he was traded to the New York Islanders during the 1994-1995 season. Kirk Muller made it well known that he did not want to play for the Islanders. He reluctantly reported to and played in a handful of games before he walked out on the team, forcing a trade. He was dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he was reunited with his former Habs’ coach Pat Burns. Muller didn’t produce for the Leafs as expected as he was slowing with age. He was traded to the Florida Panthers where he became a leader in the dressing room, more so than on the ice where his offensive production was all but gone. Muller struggled in Florida and was traded to the Dallas Stars in the middle of the 1999-2000 season. He became part of the “Grumpy Old Men” line with Mike Keane and John MacLean. After 4 seasons in Dallas, Muller retired at the end of the 2002-2003 season. Following his retirement as a player, Muller returned to the Habs as an assistant coach from 2006 to 2011. He was a coach of the Carolina Hurricanes from 2011-2014 and assistant coach of the St. Louis Blues from2014-2016. He is currently an associate coach of the Montreal Canadiens. Despite some solid performances with the Bruins, Ranford didn’t get the chance to shine until he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in late 1988. Bill Ranford backed up starting goaltender Grant Fuhr and helped lead the Oilers to the 1988 Stanley Cup Championship. The following season, Ranford was again backup for Fuhr but a serious injury left top spot open for Billy Ranford. Ranford proved himself to be a superstar for the Oilers, leading them to their second Stanley Cup Championship in 1990 against his old team, the Boston Bruins. Ranford was the unanimous choice for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Bill Ranford joined Team Canada in 1991 as the starting goalie in the Canada Cup Series. They went undefeated and Ranford was picked as MVP. He was also chosen as the starting goalie in the 1993 and 1994 World Championship where they won gold the second year. Ranford was traded back to Boston and later played for the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings and back to Edmonton where he ended his career. Bill Ranford is currently the goaltending coach for the LA Kings, a position he’s held since 2006. He had his name added to the Cup a third and fourth time as a coach in 2012 and 2014. He began his career coaching at the varsity and junior levels in 1977. He led the Oshawa Legionaries to back to back championships in 1979 and 1980. Mike Keenan moved on to coaching the Rochester Americans to the AHL championship in 1983. The following year, Keenan got his first high profile coaching job, coaching the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984. Learn More about Vic Hadfield: Vic Hadfield made it to the NHL as a rugged enforcer for the New York Rangers in 1959. He posted triple digit penalty numbers and led the league in 1963-1964 with 151 penalty minutes. As Hadfield’s career progressed with the Rangers, he was put on the same line with Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert. This line would become known as the Goal a Game line and Hadfield’s focuses shifted scoring. Vic Hadfield was an example of one player doing it all as his points totals came closer to matching his penalty minutes. In 1971-1972, he had his career best season with 50 goals, 106 points and 142 PIM. He became captain of the New York Rangers the following season and was also chosen to play in the 1972 Summit Series. Hadfield was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for the start of the 1974 season where he played for 2 seasons before a knee injury ended his career. He played right wing in the NHL for the Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Phoenix Coyotes. With these teams Gartner played a total of 19 seasons. Gartner was originally drafted by the Washington Capitals in 1979 and made his debut that year in October against the Buffalo Sabres. 1979-1980 was a solid season for Gartner. When Gartner was traded in 1989, he left Washington as the all-time leader in career goals, assists and points. As of 2017, Gartner is third in goals and points and fourth in assists. Despite Gartner being a skillful player, he only lasted one season with Minnesota before he was traded to the Rangers. Gartner scored 11 goals and 16 points in the remaining 12 regular season games. The next season, 1990-1991, Gartner became the first player to reach his 500th goal, 500th assist and 100th point all in one season. The next season he became the first Ranger to score at least 40 goals in 3 consecutive seasons. Gartner was traded again in 1993-1994 to the Leafs. He played with them until 1996 when he was traded to the Coyotes before he retired, two seasons later.
