He is widely regarded as one of the top defensemen in NHL history. After only one year at Boston College, Leetch played in the 1988 Olympics for the US Olympic hockey team. Just days later he made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers in February of 1988. In his first full season, the following year he was awarded the Calder Trophy as well as being chosen for the NHL All-Star Rookie team. In 1992, Leetch became the only American defenseman, and fifth overall, to score 100 points in a season and was awarded the Norris Trophy. Two years later, in 1994, the Rangers won both the Presidents' Trophy as well as the Stanley Cup. Due to his performance in the playoffs, Leetch became the first non-Canadian to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. He served as captain for the American team in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Brian Leetch served as captain for the Rangers from 1997-2000. Leetch was traded to Toronto in 2004 but due to lockout the last year of his contract expired and he became a free agent. He signed on with Boston for 2005-2006 season and then retired. He was inducted into the US Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008, in the same year the Rangers retired his number. He was a goaltender that played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars and the Vancouver Canucks. Maniago was originally drafted by Toronto in 1960. He played seven games for the Leafs in the 1960-1961 season. He was picked by the Montreal Canadiens the following season. The high point of his time with Montreal would be a 14-game stint in the relief of the ailing Jaques Plante in 1963. Maniago had a good season with the Minneapolis Bruins of the CHL in 1965, winning the league's MVP award. After that he was traded to the Rangers. In 1966, Maniago competed for the starter goalie and was also given a questionable distinction by allowing Bobby Hull to score his 51st goal that year as Hull was the first in history to do so. In 1967, Maniago was the expanding Minnesota North Stars first pick for a goaltender. Due to Maniago’s play the North Stars were led to the playoffs five out of six of their first seasons however at the end Minnesota struggled. They tried to find a suitable goalie to help Maniago before taking Gump Worsley out of retirement in 1970. After 1974, Minnesota's fortune sagged as Worsley retired and Maniago was traded to the Canucks where he played two seasons before retirement. Learn More about Eddie Giacomin: Ed Giacomin was an NHL goaltender that played during the Original Six Era from 1965 when he made it to the big league to 1978. He played for the New York Rangers and the Detroit Red Wings. Ed Giacomin overcame many obstacles on his journey to the NHL. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. During Giacomin’s second NHL season, he led the NHL in shutouts and helped the Rangers reach the playoffs for only the second time in nine seasons. Eddie Giacomin was the Rangers starting goaltender for nine seasons, leading the league in shutouts for three seasons. He won the Vezina Trophy with partner Gilles Villemure in 1971. Giacomin spent his last three years as a player with the Detroit Red Wings before retiring in 1978. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987 and his number 1 jersey was retired by the Rangers in 1989. He played in the NHL and WHA as a goaltender. During his career, Mio played for the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and the Indianapolis Racers. Mio first put himself on the map for professional hockey when he decided to join the Colorado College from 1972-1976. During that time Mio became a standout as he won first and second all-star awards. He also made the NCAA west first all-American team two years in a row. In 1974, Mio was officially drafted by the Blackhawks and the Blazers of the WHA but he played with neither and spent most of his time playing with smaller teams until he went to the Indianapolis Racers. Mio's goaltending was rough with the Racers and the biggest thing in his career would be befriending Wayne Gretzky. Shortly after that Mio was traded again to the Oilers in 1978. In Alberta, Mio got his first NHL action and had his first winning season in 1980-1981 before being traded again to the Rangers. With New York Mio backstopped the Rangers for two seasons, then he was traded to Detroit for a season before retiring in 1986.
