He began his NHL career as a player in 1953 as a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings, winning his first Stanley Cup in 1954. He would go on to play for the Chicago Blackhawks winning his second Cup in 1961, and two more with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1962 and 1964. Arbour subsequently became first captain of the expansion team the St. Louis Blues. He retired as a player early in the 1970-71 season. Al Arbour began his coaching career with the St. Louis Blues before taking on a young New York Islanders in 1973. He took the Islanders from dead last in the standing to the Stanley Cup finals in just 2 seasons. Although the Islanders reached the playoffs and finals in later seasons, it wasn’t until 1980 that they would bring home their first Stanley Cup. They won 3 more consecutive Stanley Cups, setting a new record for Stanley Cup victories and 19 consecutive playoff series victories. Arbour would retire from coaching for an executive position in 1986 although he would once again return to the bench in 1989 to once again coach the Islanders. By the time he retired for good, Al Arbour had coached 1500 games with the same team and won 740 games. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York Islanders Hall of Fame. Learn More about Al MacInnis: Al MacInnis was a legendary defenseman that was best known for super hard slapshots. MacInnis was drafted in the first round, 15th overall by the Calgary Flames in 1981. He went on to play 23 seasons in the NHL, with the Calgary Flames and the St. Louis Blues. He was a 13 time All-Star and 7-time winner of the All-Star games’ Hardest Shot competition. MacInnis played an instrumental role in his teams’ 1989 Stanley Cup Championship and was the recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP. He left the Flames after 11 seasons and was the leader in scoring with 822 points, 603 assists and 803 games played. Al MacInnis was traded to the St. Louis Blues where he continued to excel as a high scoring defenseman. He was awarded the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the leagues’ best defenseman in 1999. Unfortunately, MacInnis’ career was cut short due to a series of eye injuries that led him to retire in 2005. Ending his career with 1,274 points, MacInnis ranked third all-time in goals, assists and points amongst defensemen. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007 and his number was retired by the Blues and raised to the rafters by the Flames. Following his retirement as a player, Al MacInnis remained with the Blues organization and serviced as Vice-President of Hockey Operations. Learn More about Bernie Parent: Bernie Parent was an NHL goaltender that played 13 seasons from 1965-1979 for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Flyers. Parent played just 39 games with the Bruins before he was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers where he would emerge as top goaltender. Although Parent was a top netminder, the Flyers seeking more offense, traded Parent to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The trade proved beneficial to Parent as he got to share goaltender duties with his childhood hero Jacques Plante. Under Plante’s guidance, Parent became a better and more proficient goalie as he perfected the “stand-up style” he modeled after Plante. Bernie Parent left the Leafs to join the WHA and returned to the Philadelphia Flyers after just one season. His next two years in Philly proved to be the best of his career. He won back to back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975 along with the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in both seasons. Sadly, Bernie Parent’s career was cut short in 1979 when he took a stick to his right eye causing temporary blindness. Although his vision returned, there was permanent damage to his eye forcing his retirement. Parent remained with the Flyers for a number of years as goaltending coach. Learn More about Bill Barber: Bill Barber has dedicated more than three dedicated more than three decades to the Philadelphia Flyers organization as both player and coach. He was drafted 7th overall in the 1972 draft. He spent only 11 games with the AHL affiliate before being called up to the Flyers, scoring 30 goals and 34 assists in his rookie season making him a contender for the Calder Trophy. He was part of the power LCB line with Reggie Leach and Bobby Clarke. Barber was driven to become an all-around player for every type of situation. He was part of the Flyers’ “Broad Street Bullies” era but he was never a goon or partook in the violent aspect of the game. Barber along with his LCB linemates played a significant role in the Flyers successful Stanley Cup Championships of 1974 and 1975. He captained the Flyers in the 1981-82 season and part of the following season. Bill Barber’s most memorable career moments came from his time representing Team Canada on the International Ice Hockey stage. He scored the game tying goal in the 1976 Canada Cup vs. the Czechoslovakian team to force overtime and Team Canada’s victory. Unfortunately, Bill Barber suffered from a career ending knee injury that forced his retirement after the 1984-85 season. Although his career ended with only 420 goals and 883 points, Barber’s number 7 was retired by the Flyers in 1990 after he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. After his playing career, the coached the Hershey Bears and was the Flyers’ assistant coach from 1985-1988. He coached the Flyers farm team the Phantoms for 4 years where he won the team’s first Calder Cup in 1998. He won the Jack Adams Trophy in 2001 as the Flyers’ head coach. He was director of Player Personnel with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2002-2008 where he won the Stanley Cup in 2004. He returned to the Flyers in 2008 as a scouting consultant. In his first season as captain of the Maple Leafs, he finished the season with 41 goals and 59 assists, the first Leaf ever to reach the one-hundred-point level. In the Canada Cup that year, he scored the winning goal for Team Canada in overtime. Sittler also set an NHL record for most points in one game which still stands. Due to a breakdown in communication with ownership and management of the Maple Leafs, Sittler requested to be traded. In 1982 he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers where he played one season. On the same day the Flyers were going to announce Sittler as their captain, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. After retirement, Sittler was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989. He was also elected to the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2016. Learn more about Doug Gilmour: Doug Gilmour was drafted into the NHL in 1982 by the St. Louis Blues. He quickly earned the nickname “Killer” due to his aggressive physical style of play despite his smaller stature. Gilmour was part of the largest trade in NHL history bringing him from Calgary to Toronto where he immediately helped to revitalize the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs. Gilmour broke both personal and franchise scoring records with the Leafs in his first full season with the organization and ultimately led them to finish the 1992-93 season with the eighth best record in the NHL and their first winning season since 1978-79. Gilmour was one of the most popular players on the Leafs during tenure. Despite his status as fan favorite, Gilmour was traded in 1997 to the New Jersey Devils and subsequently played for the Chicago Blackhawks. With the Blackhawks, Gilmour returned to Toronto to play the last game in historic Maple Leaf Garden receiving a standing ovation by the Toronto fans during the Garden’s closing ceremonies. After a few more trades, Gilmour returned to Toronto where he played only one game before an injury caused him to miss the remainder of the season. Gilmour officially announced his retirement on September 8, 2003. Gilmour had scored 450 goals and 964 assists in 1474 games over his 20 year NHL career. On January 31, 2009 Gilmour’s number 93 was raised to the rafters by the Toronto Maple Leafs and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
