Learn More about Paul Henderson: Paul Henderson was a right winger that played in both the NHL and WHA for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Flames and the Toronto Toros and Birmingham Bulls of the WHA. His playing career lasted from 1969 to 1981. Henderson was a consistent hockey player with quick feet and a hard shot and this led him to be chosen to the 1972 Summit Series. The 1972 Summit Series was an eight-game series between two great hockey nations, Canada and the Soviet Union. Taking place during the cold war era, the series was not just a battle on the ice but a battle of ideologies and a stand against communism. This series was a life changing event for Paul Henderson who scored the game-winning goal in the last three games of the series. Henderson scored “the goal” in game 8 with only 34 seconds to play to win the series for Canada. Paul Henderson became a national hero. He was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and in 2005 with the 1972 Summit Series team. He has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame as well as becoming a member of Ontario’s Sports Hall of Fame. He was given the Order of Canada in 2012. Learn More about Peter Forsberg: Swedish centre Peter Forsberg was drafted sixth overall in 1991 by the Philadelphia Flyers, but due to a holdout by first overall draft pick Eric Lindros, Forsberg and four other players, along with two draft picks, were traded to the Quebec Nordiques in exchange for Lindros. This trade was a strong basis for the Nordiques/Avalanche foundation. He signed a contract with Quebec in October of 1993 but due to a lockout his debut was delayed until 1995. His rookie season was impressive, with 50 points on offense, responsible defence, and physical play. At the end of the season he was awarded the Calder Trophy and the NHL All-Rookie Team. In August of 1995 the Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche. During their first season in Colorado they won the season's Stanley Cup championships. This 1995-1996 season, was both Forsberg's highest scoring season and the only time he would play in every game of his team's season. The following year he played in only 65 regular games and 14 of 17 playoff games due to a bruised thigh, however due to the points scored while he was playing, Forsberg earned the team its first Presidents' Trophy. That year he was chosen to appear on the cover of EA Sports' game “NHL 98”. In 2001 Colorado won another Stanley Cup but Forsberg was unable to play past the second round due to health reasons. After getting his spleen removed he decided to take the following season off to recuperate but did return for the playoffs where he lead the scoring with 27 points. Season 2002-2003 was a banner year for Forsberg, now much healthier than in previous years, he led the league in scoring with 106 points and was awarded both the Art Ross Trophy and the Hart Memorial Trophy. In 2005-2006 season after the NHL lockout, Forsberg signed a two-year contract with Philadelphia due to the salary cap imposed on the league. These two seasons were plagued by injuries and surgeries that minimized Forsberg's ice time. After his contract expired he was traded to the Nashville Predators. As an unrestricted free agent, he played part of a season with Colorado, again being sidelined due to injury. In 2011 he announced his retirement citing troubles with his ankles and feet as part of his reasons. His jersey number was retired during the 2011-12 season. He played for the Boston Bruins, California Golden Seals, Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings. Leach was originally drafted by Boston in 1970. He played two seasons with them but was traded along with Rick Smith and Bob Stewart to California. After playing three seasons with California, Leach was traded to Philadelphia for Larry Wright, Al MacAdam and Ron Chipperfield in 1974. Leach won the Stanley Cup with Philadelphia in the 1974-75 season. After a few seasons with Philadelphia, Leach played his last season with the Red Wings then retired. Middleton had a strong rookie season with the Rangers but at the end of the second season was traded to the Boston Bruins in what sportswriters called one of the most lopsided deals in NHL history. Rick Middleton was traded to Bruins for Ken Hodge, a veteran player. Hodge would only play one season with the Rangers before putting up his skates. Middleton, on the other hand, was a young player at the beginning of his career and would spend the next twelve seasons in a Bruins uniform. Coach Don Cherry helped develop Rick Middleton into a solid two way forward who was strong on both the power play and the penalty kill. Middleton had five straight forty goal and 90 point seasons and finished his tenure in Boston with nearly 900 points as a Bruin. In 1985, Middleton became co-captain of the Bruins wearing the “C” during home games while teammate Ray Bourque captained the team for away games. He set an NHL record for most points in a playoff series with 19 and most assists in a playoff series with 14. Learn More about Ron Hextall: Ron Hextall was an NHL goaltender that was active in the NHL from 1984-1999, playing for the Philadelphia Flyers, Quebec Nordiques and the New York Islanders. Hextall is a third generation NHL player-the grandson of Hall of Famer Bryan Hextall (NY Rangers) and son of Bryan Hextall Jr. who played in the NHL for 10 seasons, mainly for the Pittsburgh Penguins. His uncle, Dennis Hextall spent 14 seasons in the NHL. Ron Hextall brought a new style of goaltending to the NHL because he liked to come out of the net and play the puck, lending support to his team’s defensemen. Hextall was also a very aggressive goalie which lead to three suspensions of 6 or more games throughout his career. He had more than 100 penalty minute in each of his first three seasons and set NHL records for penalty minutes by a goaltender. Hextall was an excellent stick handler and became the first NHL goalie to score a goal, not once but twice, once against the Bruins on an empty net and again against the Capitals. Ron Hextall played his first four NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. A combination of injures and suspensions let Hextall to be traded to the Quebec Nordiques in 1992 as part of the Eric Lindros trade when Lindros refused to play for the Nordiques who drafted him first overall in the 1991 Entry Draft. Hextall helped the Nordiques reach the playoffs and was again traded the following season to the New York Islander where he played one season before being sent back to the Flyers. Federov could do it all: he had superior speed, excellent puck handling skills and was a gifted playmaker. He normally played as a forward but also could play defense if needed. He began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1990. He very quickly became a fan favorite with his extraordinary skills and high scoring. The 1993-1994 season was a career season for Federov where he scored 56 goals and 120 points. In the mid-nineties, Detroit coach Scotty Bowman put Federov on the Russian Five line with Vyacheslav Kozlov and Igor Larionov as wingers and Slava Fetisov and Vladimir Konstantinov on defence. This highly effective line essential shut down the opposing teams’ offense and they played a leading role in the three Red Wings Stanley Cup Championships in 1997, 1998 and 2002. Sergei Federov won numerous NHL awards including the Hart Memorial Trophy for MVP (1994), the Lester B. Pearson Award, the Frank J. Selke Trophy and three Presidents Trophies with Detroit. Hull ended his career with as impressive record of 1063 regular season games played in the NHL, with 610 goals, 560 assists and a total of 1170 points.
