Ciccarelli signed a contract with the Minnesota North Stars as a free agent in 1979. He was called up from the minors for the latter half of the 1980-1981 season where he played in 32 games scoring 18 goals and 30 points. In the playoffs, the North Stars went all the way to the finals with Ciccarelli contributing 14 goals and 21 points in 19 games. His solid performance earned him a spot on the North Stars and he built on his rookie success with a team high 55 goals and 106 points in his sophomore season. He left Minnesota in March of 1989 in a trade to the Washington Capitals. He had 651 points with the North Stars, 4th in club history. Dino Ciccarelli spent the rest of his career with shorter stints with the Washington Capitals, the Detroit Red Wings, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. His gritty “in-your-face” style of hockey helped inspire his team and provided a veteran presence with his later teams. Upon his retirement in 1999, Ciccarelli had played in 1232 regular season games with 608 goals and 592 assists for 1200 points. He was ranked ninth in scoring in NHL history. As a teenager, he suffered serious burns to his hands and feet in a kitchen fire and was told he would never play hockey. Giacomin was even more determined to prove them wrong. He spent six seasons with the minor league Providence Red before becoming the starting goalie for the New York Rangers, an impressive feat considering there were only six starting goalie positions in the NHL at the time. Learn More About Mike Vernon: Mike Vernon was a young goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the NHL playing for the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Hose Sharks and the Florida Panthers. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played a few seasons with the Flames and was named one of the best goaltenders in that era. In the playoffs, the North Stars went all the way to the finals with Ciccarelli contributing 14 goals and 21 points in 19 games. His solid performance earned him a spot on the North Stars and he built on his rookie success with a team high 55 goals and 106 points in his sophomore season. He left Minnesota in March of 1989 in a trade to the Washington Capitals. He had 651 points with the North Stars, 4th in club history. Dino Ciccarelli spent the rest of his career with shorter stints with the Washington Capitals, the Detroit Red Wings, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. His gritty “in-your-face” style of hockey helped inspire his team and provided a veteran presence with his later teams. He played for the New York Americans and the New York Rangers. Originally, Rayner played for the Kenora Thistles in the Manitoba Junior League. He showed his potential by backstopping the team into getting a Memorial Cup. The year after that he turned professional and played for the Americans however he spent most of his time on the affiliate team the Springfield Indians of the AHL. When Rayner was with the Indians he led the league in shutouts and goals against average. He was named to the Second All-Star Team. The next season, Rayner was the leading goalie for the Americans final season but then World War II started, and the Americans folded. Rayner spent the next three years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He played two seasons there with the teams based out of Victoria. After the war, Rayner signed as a free agent with the Rangers in 1945. Rayner was the starter goalie in six of the seven next seasons. Although Rayner hadn't set any goals he was still one of the best goalies of his era. 1948-51 were his best seasons as he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's MVP in 1950 after leading the Rangers to overtime in the seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals. Learn More about Mike Keenan: Mike Keenan is a long time professional hockey coach that has served several leagues and teams in the NHL. He began his career coaching at the varsity and junior levels in 1977. He led the Oshawa Legionaries to back to back championships in 1979 and 1980. Mike Keenan moved on to coaching the Rochester Americans to the AHL championship in 1983. The following year, Keenan got his first high profile coaching job, coaching the Philadelphia Flyers in 1984. He was with the Flyers for 4 years before becoming head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks in 1988 and head coach of the New York Rangers in 1993. In 1994, he led the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup Championship since 1940. Mike Keenan also was coach and/or GM for the St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins and the Florida Panthers. In 2007 Keenan became senior advisor to the Swedish Ice Hockey Association. This position was short lived as he returned to the NHL to coach the Calgary Flames. Keenan recorded his 600th win as a coach with the Flames. Keenan left the NHL to join the KHL in 2013. In his first season with the NHL, Laprade earned 34 points in 49 games and won the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year. He made four All-Star game appearances throughout his career. Edgar was also a gentleman on the ice going 3 full seasons without a penalty earning the Lady Byng Trophy. Unfortunately, Edgar Laprade never got his name on a Stanley Cup. He was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. Edgar Laprade passed away in 2014 at the age of 94. He is widely regarded as one of the top defensemen in NHL history. After only one year at Boston College, Leetch played in the 1988 Olympics for the US Olympic hockey team. Just days later he made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers in February of 1988. In his first full season, the following year he was awarded the Calder Trophy as well as being chosen for the NHL All-Star Rookie team. In 1992, Leetch became the only American defenseman, and fifth overall, to score 100 points in a season and was awarded the Norris Trophy. Two years later, in 1994, the Rangers won both the Presidents' Trophy as well as the Stanley Cup. Due to his performance in the playoffs, Leetch became the first non-Canadian to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. He served as captain for the American team in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. Brian Leetch served as captain for the Rangers from 1997-2000. Leetch was traded to Toronto in 2004 but due to lockout the last year of his contract expired and he became a free agent. He signed on with Boston for 2005-2006 season and then retired. He was inducted into the US Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008, in the same year the Rangers retired his number.
