He played for the Boston Bruins, California Golden Seals, Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings. Leach was originally drafted by Boston in 1970. He played two seasons with them but was traded along with Rick Smith and Bob Stewart to California. After playing three seasons with California, Leach was traded to Philadelphia for Larry Wright, Al MacAdam and Ron Chipperfield in 1974. Leach won the Stanley Cup with Philadelphia in the 1974-75 season. After a few seasons with Philadelphia, Leach played his last season with the Red Wings then retired. Leach's best season was 1975-1976 with the Flyers. He set a career high with 61 goals 91 points and 11 game winning goals. His 61 goals won Leach what is now known as the Richard Trophy and he also won the Conn Smythe Trophy that season. During his career, Leach scored 381 goals 285, assists and 666 points in 934 career games. Leach was inducted into the Philadelphia Flyers Hall of Fame in 1992. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. The Howes led their team to the 1974 and 1975 Avco Cups—the WHA version of the Stanley Cup. Mark also won the Lou Kaplan Trophy as Rookie of the Year. The Howe family moved to the New England Whalers which became the Hartford Whalers when the WHA and NHL merged. The Howes played one more season together in the NHL. Mark Howe was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1982 and by then he had become a full-time defenseman. The 1985-1986 season was a career season for Mark where he put up some of the best numbers ever by an NHL defenseman with 24 goals and 58 assists for 82 points. Despite Mark Howe’s contribution, the injury riddled Flyers were not playoff contenders. After the 1991-1992 season, Mark Howe signed with the Detroit Red Wings, his father’s former team in the hopes of winning a Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, the Red Wings were swept by the New Jersey Devils in the 1995 Stanley Cup Finals. Following his retirement as a player, Howe remained with the Detroit Red Wings as a video coach and pro scout, earning Stanley Cup rings in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. Ciccarelli signed a contract with the Minnesota North Stars as a free agent in 1979. He was called up from the minors for the latter half of the 1980-1981 season where he played in 32 games scoring 18 goals and 30 points. In the playoffs, the North Stars went all the way to the finals with Ciccarelli contributing 14 goals and 21 points in 19 games. His solid performance earned him a spot on the North Stars and he built on his rookie success with a team high 55 goals and 106 points in his sophomore season. He left Minnesota in March of 1989 in a trade to the Washington Capitals. He had 651 points with the North Stars, 4th in club history. Dino Ciccarelli spent the rest of his career with shorter stints with the Washington Capitals, the Detroit Red Wings, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. His gritty “in-your-face” style of hockey helped inspire his team and provided a veteran presence with his later teams. Upon his retirement in 1999, Ciccarelli had played in 1232 regular season games with 608 goals and 592 assists for 1200 points. He was ranked ninth in scoring in NHL history. Learn More about Don Cherry: Don Cherry is best known as the very outspoken commentator on the Coaches Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada. He began his hockey journey as a player in the OHL and later moved on to the minor American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears. Parent played just 39 games with the Bruins before he was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers where he would emerge as top goaltender. Although Parent was a top netminder, the Flyers seeking more offense, traded Parent to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The trade proved beneficial to Parent as he got to share goaltender duties with his childhood hero Jacques Plante. Under Plante’s guidance, Parent became a better and more proficient goalie as he perfected the “stand-up style” he modeled after Plante. Sanderson first started playing with the Boston Bruins full-time in 1967. Sanderson played in 71 games scoring 24 goals and 49 points along with had 98 PIM. Sanderson was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year, an award that had been won by teammate Bobby Orr the previous year. In the 1969-1970 season, the Bruins made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The possible last game of the series went into overtime and Bobby Orr scored the winning goal for the Bruins. People often forget that it was Derek Sanderson who passed Orr the puck for that goal. Sanderson's time with the Bruins made him very popular and in the next two seasons he helped the Bruins finish first in the league and win the Stanley Cup in the 1971-1972 season. Derek Sanderson was offered a multimillion dollar contract by rival league WHA and he went to play for the Philadelphia Blazers. Sanderson was the highest paid athlete in the world at the time with a contract of $2.65 million dollars. However his fast and furious lifestyle was plagued by his battle with addiction. He was unable to remain with any team for very long and had short stints back to Boston, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins. Eventually he lost it all and became homeless. With the help of his friend, Phil Esposito, Sanderson was able to get back up on his feet after a stint in rehab. Sanderson now spends his time helping players stay away from what he's been through. He also is an investment specialist at the Boston State Research Company which helps athletes manage their money. Worsley played in the minor leagues for 4 years and didn't enter the NHL until he was 24 years old. He won the Calder Memorial trophy and was the Rookie of the Year, in 1952, when he joined the NHL and played for the New York Rangers. In 1954 he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL where he won Most Valuable Player. In 1954, he returned to the New York Rangers as a starting goaltender beating out future star Johnny Bower for the top spot. Gump Worsley spent nine seasons with the New York Rangers before being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in 1963. Gump Worsley's best years were spent with the Montreal Canadiens where he was a part of four Stanley Cup winning teams in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969. In 1968, Worsley went undefeated in the playoffs with 11 straight wins. Worsley retired in the middle of 1969-1970 due to the team's travel schedule and his fear of flying. Worsley was coaxed out of retirement by the Minnesota North Stars due to their less demanding travel schedule and their sweetened deal of a $500 bonus per win, and $250 per tie and $100 per shutout. Worsley spent four more years in the NHL before retiring at age 44. He was one of the last players to adopt the hockey mask. Upon his retirement, Gump Worsley was third among all NHL goaltenders in games played. He retired with a record of 335 wins, 352 losses, and 150 ties, with 43 shutouts, and goals against average of 2.91. Gump Worsley was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980. Gump Worsley's best years were spent with the Montreal Canadiens where he was a part of four Stanley Cup winning teams in 1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969. In 1968, Worsley went undefeated in the playoffs with 11 straight wins. Worsley retired in the middle of 1969-1970 due to the team's travel schedule and his fear of flying. Worsley was coaxed out of retirement by the Minnesota North Stars due to their less demanding travel schedule and their sweetened deal of a $500 bonus per win, and $250 per tie and $100 per shutout. Worsley spent four more years in the NHL before retiring at age 44. He was one of the last players to adopt the hockey mask. Upon his retirement, Gump Worsley was third among all NHL goaltenders in games played. He retired with a record of 335 wins, 352 losses, and 150 ties, with 43 shutouts, and goals against average of 2.91. Gump Worsley was added to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1980. Learn More about Guy Lapointe: Guy Lapointe was an NHL defenseman that played for the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins from 1968-1984. He is best known for his time spent in Montreal when he established himself as one of the “Big Three” defenseman including Serge Savard and Larry Robinson. The “Big Three” were a key component to the Habs winning the Stanley Cup six times in 1971, 1973, 1976-1979. Guy Lapointe was an all-around defenseman that excelled in checking but also had a lethal slapshot. He was often used on the powerplay. He only spent two seasons with St. Louis and one with the Boston Bruins before announcing his retirement. Internationally, Guy Lapointe represented Team Canada and was chosen to play in the famous 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union. He played again in the 1976 Canada Cup. Lapointe finished his career after playing 884 regular season games with 622 points, including 171 goals and 451 assists. He still holds the record for most goals for any Montreal defensemen with 28 and most goals for a rookie defenseman with 15. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993. Learn More about Charlie Hodge: Charlie Hodge was a goaltender that was active in professional hockey from 1955-1971 for the Montreal Canadiens, Oakland Seals and the Vancouver Canucks, alternating with the NHL teams and their minor-league affiliates. During Charlie Hodge’s era in the NHL, teams were only allowed to carry one goaltender so Hodge was only used in case of emergency. He played backup to superstar Jacques Plante for the Canadiens. Charlie Hodge got to play full time after Plante’s trade in 1962, he won the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender in 1963-64 and shared the trophy with Gump Worsley in 1965-1966. His name appears on the Stanley Cup six times in 1953 and from 1956-1960 although he only played in one of the finals. Having been left unprotected by the Canadiens, Charlie Hodge was picked up by the Oakland Seals in the 1967 expansion draft. He was an expansion pick again in 1970 by the Vancouver Canucks. He retired as player in 1971 and was recruited as a scout by GM John Ferguson of the Winnipeg Jets a decade later. He has served as scout for Tampa Bay Lightning and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
