His playing career lasted from 1969 to 1981. Henderson was a consistent hockey player with quick feet and a hard shot and this led him to be chosen to the 1972 Summit Series. The 1972 Summit Series was an eight game series between two great hockey nations, Canada and the Soviet Union. Taking place during the cold war era, the series was not just a battle on the ice but a battle of ideologies and a stand against communism. This series was a life changing event for Paul Henderson who scored the game winning goal in the last three games of the series. Henderson scored “the goal” in game 8 with only 34 seconds to play to win the series for Canada. Paul Henderson became a national hero. He was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and in 2005 with the 1972 Summit Series team. He has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame as well as becoming a member of Ontario’s Sports Hall of Fame. He was given the Order of Canada in 2012. Learn More about Rogie Vachon: Rogie Vachon was an NHL goaltender that was active from 1965-1982 playing for the Montreal Canadiens, LA Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins. Vachon entered the NHL as backup goaltender for the Canadiens but his playoff success ensured him a spot on the team roster. Vachon went on to win the Vezina Trophy with teammate Gump Worsley the following season as the lead the team to two back to back Stanley Cup Championships in 1968 and 1969 and a third in 1971. Rogie Vachon was traded to the Los Angeles King where he played from 1971 to 1978 where he celebrated some of the best moments of his career. He was team MVP for 4 consecutive years starting in 1973. He was runner up for the Vezina Trophy in 1975 and he was selected for NHL Second All-Star Team in 1975 and 1977. Vachon was considered one of the best one-to-one goaltenders in his era and he never allowed a single goal on a penalty shot for his entire career. Rogie Vachon was honoured by the Los Angeles Kings as his was the first number retired by the franchise in 1985. Following his retirement as a player, Rogie Vachon continued to serve the LA Kings as GM from 1984-1992. He was interim head coach on 3 separate occasions. Learn More about Dino Ciccarelli: Dino Ciccarelli was a gritty winger that played 19 seasons in the NHL despite going undrafted. Ciccarelli signed a contract with the Minnesota North Stars as a free agent in 1979. He was called up from the minors for the latter half of the 1980-1981 season where he played in 32 games scoring 18 goals and 30 points. In the playoffs, the North Stars went all the way to the finals with Ciccarelli contributing 14 goals and 21 points in 19 games. His solid performance earned him a spot on the North Stars and he built on his rookie success with a team high 55 goals and 106 points in his sophomore season. He left Minnesota in March of 1989 in a trade to the Washington Capitals. He had 651 points with the North Stars, 4th in club history. Dino Ciccarelli spent the rest of his career with shorter stints with the Washington Capitals, the Detroit Red Wings, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers. His gritty “in-your-face” style of hockey helped inspire his team and provided a veteran presence with his later teams. Upon his retirement in 1999, Ciccarelli had played in 1232 regular season games with 608 goals and 592 assists for 1200 points. He was ranked ninth in scoring in NHL history. He was the first goalie to practice and perfect the now common butterfly stance, as he'd fall on knees, spread his legs to take away the bottom corners and five-hole and let his rapier-like arm reflexes take care of the top corners. Almost every goalie in hockey today relies on the strategies he perfected. During his 18-year NHL career, which began in 1952 and ended in 1971, Glenn posted a 407-327-163 record, 2.51 goals-against-average and recorded 84 shutouts. He was a First Team All-Star seven times, won three Vezina Trophies, was voted the league's top rookie in 1955-56 and was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy in a losing cause in 1968. Despite his lengthy career, Glenn won his only Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 1961. Hall played his rookie season and more with Detroit Red Wings, before a trade involving a Red Wings goalie. Glen Hall was packaged up in the infamous Ted Lindsay trade to the Chicago Blackhawks. At the age of 36, he was left unprotected in the 1967 Expansion Draft and was chosen by the St. Louis Blues. Due in large part to Hall's heroics, St. Louis went all the way to the Stanley Cup final in their first year in the NHL. Though they would eventually lose to the Montreal Canadiens in four games, Hall was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the league's top playoff performer. During the upcoming season, he played for and was the leading scorer for the Green Bay Gamblers in the United States Hockey League. He was picked for the 2010 All-Star Game. He became playoff MVP for the playoff contest as well as Rookie of the Year for the season. The following season he played with Central Collegiate Hockey Association team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, where again he was a leading scorer. It wasn't until the 2012-2013 season that Lee got his first call up to the Islanders. Lee scored his first NHL goal during the opening period of his first game on April 2, 2013. He was then sent to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (the AHL affiliate of the Islanders) but was called up again half way through the season. In 2016-2017 Lee played a full season with the Islanders. He played for the New York Americans and the New York Rangers. Originally, Rayner played for the Kenora Thistles in the Manitoba Junior League. He showed his potential by backstopping the team into getting a Memorial Cup. The year after that he turned professional and played for the Americans however he spent most of his time on the affiliate team the Springfield Indians of the AHL. When Rayner was with the Indians he led the league in shutouts and goals against average. He was named to the Second All-Star Team. The next season, Rayner was the leading goalie for the Americans final season but then World War II started, and the Americans folded. Rayner spent the next three years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He played two seasons there with the teams based out of Victoria. After the war, Rayner signed as a free agent with the Rangers in 1945. Rayner was the starter goalie in six of the seven next seasons. Although Rayner hadn't set any goals he was still one of the best goalies of his era. 1948-51 were his best seasons as he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's MVP in 1950 after leading the Rangers to overtime in the seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals. Learn More about Ron Hextall: Ron Hextall was an NHL goaltender that was active in the NHL from 1984-1999, playing for the Philadelphia Flyers, Quebec Nordiques and the New York Islanders. Hextall is a third generation NHL player-the grandson of Hall of Famer Bryan Hextall (NY Rangers) and son of Bryan Hextall Jr. who played in the NHL for 10 seasons, mainly for the Pittsburgh Penguins. His uncle, Dennis Hextall spent 14 seasons in the NHL. Ron Hextall brought a new style of goaltending to the NHL because he liked to come out of the net and play the puck, lending support to his team’s defensemen. Hextall was also a very aggressive goalie which lead to three suspensions of 6 or more games throughout his career. He had more than 100 penalty minute in each of his first three seasons and set NHL records for penalty minutes by a goaltender. Hextall was an excellent stick handler and became the first NHL goalie to score a goal, not once but twice, once against the Bruins on an empty net and again against the Capitals. Ron Hextall played his first four NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. A combination of injures and suspensions let Hextall to be traded to the Quebec Nordiques in 1992 as part of the Eric Lindros trade when Lindros refused to play for the Nordiques who drafted him first overall in the 1991 Entry Draft. Hextall helped the Nordiques reach the playoffs and was again traded the following season to the New York Islander where he played one season before being sent back to the Flyers. Hextall helped the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. At the end of the 1998-1998 season, Hextall was waived by the Flyers and went undrafted in the expansion draft. He announced his retirement on September 6, 1999. After his retirement as a player, Ron Hextall became a Flyers scout and eventually worked his way up to General Manger of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2014.
