He played in the NHL and WHA as a goaltender. During his career, Mio played for the Edmonton Oilers, New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and the Indianapolis Racers. Mio first put himself on the map for professional hockey when he decided to join the Colorado College from 1972-1976. During that time Mio became a standout as he won first and second all-star awards. He also made the NCAA west first all-American team two years in a row. In 1974, Mio was officially drafted by the Blackhawks and the Blazers of the WHA but he played with neither and spent most of his time playing with smaller teams until he went to the Indianapolis Racers. Mio's goaltending was rough with the Racers and the biggest thing in his career would be befriending Wayne Gretzky. Shortly after that Mio was traded again to the Oilers in 1978. In Alberta, Mio got his first NHL action and had his first winning season in 1980-1981 before being traded again to the Rangers. With New York Mio backstopped the Rangers for two seasons, then he was traded to Detroit for a season before retiring in 1986. He was a goaltender that played for the New Jersey Devils, Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. Kirk McLean was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 1984. He debuted with the Devils in 1985-1986 before being called to Oshawa. McLean had to compete with many for ice time so he was sent to their AHL affiliate, the Maine Mariners. He was called up from Maine in 1986 and allowed only one goal of 24 shots into the net, letting the Devils win the game. He played a few more games with them before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks in 1987. With the Canucks, McLean earned his first Vezina Trophy and achieved his first NHL career shutout. In 1991-1992 Mclean earned his next big achievement when he stopped all 45 shots making it his third shutout of the season and the Canucks first against Montreal. In 1994 during a game against the Kings, McLean became a part of history when he let Wayne Gretzky score his 802nd goal making Gretzky the All Time Leading Goal-Scorer. After that, McLean was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. He played with them for a season before being traded to Florida for two seasons. McLean was traded yet again to the Rangers before retiring. He was a goaltender that played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars and the Vancouver Canucks. Maniago was originally drafted by Toronto in 1960. He played seven games for the Leafs in the 1960-1961 season. He was picked by the Montreal Canadiens the following season. The high point of his time with Montreal would be a 14-game stint in the relief of the ailing Jaques Plante in 1963. Maniago had a good season with the Minneapolis Bruins of the CHL in 1965, winning the league's MVP award. After that he was traded to the Rangers. In 1966, Maniago competed for the starter goalie and was also given a questionable distinction by allowing Bobby Hull to score his 51st goal that year as Hull was the first in history to do so. In 1967, Maniago was the expanding Minnesota North Stars first pick for a goaltender. Due to Maniago’s play the North Stars were led to the playoffs five out of six of their first seasons however at the end Minnesota struggled. They tried to find a suitable goalie to help Maniago before taking Gump Worsley out of retirement in 1970. After 1974, Minnesota's fortune sagged as Worsley retired and Maniago was traded to the Canucks where he played two seasons before retirement. Pat LaFontaine was selected 3rd overall by the New York Islanders in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. After representing Team USA in the 1984 Olympic Winter Games, LaFontaine made it back to the NHL in time to join the Islanders in the Stanley Cup Finals. The 1987-1988 season was the first of six 40 plus point seasons for Lafontaine. In the 1987 Stanley Cup division finals, LaFontaine scored the game winning goal in the 4th period of overtime against the Washington Capitals in game seven that was dubbed the “Easter Epic”. LaFontaine was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in October 1991 and during his second season with the Sabres, set a team record with 148 points. The potential hockey superstar suffered several career setbacks including concussions, a broken jaw and an injured knee. He was awarded the Bill Masterson Trophy at the end of the 1995 season for his determination and perseverance. He was traded to the New York Rangers but a series of concussions only saw Pat Lafontaine appear in 62 games. He retired at the end of the season with 468 goals and 1013 points. The Sabres retired his number 16 in 2006 and LaFontaine was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003. The next season, Rayner was the leading goalie for the Americans final season but then World War II started, and the Americans folded. Rayner spent the next three years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He played two seasons there with the teams based out of Victoria. After the war, Rayner signed as a free agent with the Rangers in 1945. Rayner was the starter goalie in six of the seven next seasons. Although Rayner hadn't set any goals he was still one of the best goalies of his era. 1948-51 were his best seasons as he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's MVP in 1950 after leading the Rangers to overtime in the seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals.
