Lanny McDonald is a retired NHL winger that spent 16 seasons playing professional hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and the Calgary Flames. During his career, McDonald scored 500 goals and accumulated over 1000 points. The offensive forward had 3 consecutive 40 goal seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1979. The deal was met with fan protests outside Maple Leaf Gardens. Lanny McDonald was named captain of the Rockies where he only played in one full season before he was again traded. This time he went to his hometown Calgary Flames where he would play for the rest of his career. Playing for the Calgary Flames, Lanny McDonald had some of the best years of his career. The 1982-83 season saw McDonald battling Wayne Gretzky for top goal scorer in the league. He finished the season with 66 goals, just 5 goals behind superstar Gretzky’s total of 71. His 66 goals still stand as highest number of goals in a single season for the Calgary Flames organization. He received the Bill Masterson Trophy for “perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” He ended his career on a high note, winning the Stanley Cup in 1989. His jersey number 9, was the first to be retired by the Calgary Flames. As well, Lanny McDonald was the first Calgary Flame to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. Learn More about Darryl Sittler Darryl Sittler is a retired NHL Centre who played professional hockey from 1970 until 1985 for the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings. In his first season as captain of the Maple Leafs, he finished the season with 41 goals and 59 assists, the first Leaf ever to reach the one-hundred-point level. In the Canada Cup that year, he scored the winning goal for Team Canada in overtime. Sittler also set an NHL record for most points in one game which still stands. Due to a breakdown in communication with ownership and management of the Maple Leafs, Sittler requested to be traded. In 1982 he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers where he played one season. On the same day the Flyers were going to announce Sittler as their captain, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. After retirement, Sittler was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989. He was also elected to the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2016. His first two years in the NHL were played with the Detroit Red Wings before a trade for Terry Sawchuk landed Bucyk in a Bruins uniform in 1957. He became part of the Uke Line with fellow Canadian-Ukranian born players Vic Stasiuk and Bronco Horvath who were his linemates on the Junior Edmonton Oil Kings. Johnny Bucyk set numerous records with the Bruins although some have since been surpassed by Ray Bourque including most seasons, most games, goals, assists and points. Bucyk ended his career as the 4th leading goal scorer in NHL history at the time with 545 goals. He appeared in seven All-Star Games and was the recipient of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship and the Lester B. Pearson Award for his contribution to hockey. Learn More about Bernie Parent: Bernie Parent was an NHL goaltender that played 13 seasons from 1965-1979 for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Philadelphia Flyers. Parent played just 39 games with the Bruins before he was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers where he would emerge as top goaltender. Although Parent was a top netminder, the Flyers seeking more offense, traded Parent to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The trade proved beneficial to Parent as he got to share goaltender duties with his childhood hero Jacques Plante. Under Plante’s guidance, Parent became a better and more proficient goalie as he perfected the “stand-up style” he modeled after Plante. Bernie Parent left the Leafs to join the WHA and returned to the Philadelphia Flyers after just one season. His next two years in Philly proved to be the best of his career. He won back to back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975 along with the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in both seasons. Sadly, Bernie Parent’s career was cut short in 1979 when he took a stick to his right eye causing temporary blindness. Although his vision returned, there was permanent damage to his eye forcing his retirement. Parent remained with the Flyers for a number of years as goaltending coach. Learn More About Mike Vernon: Mike Vernon was a young goaltender who spent 19 seasons in the NHL playing for the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Hose Sharks and the Florida Panthers. Vernon started his career in the minor Calgary hockey system. After a strong rookie season he was chosen by the Calgary Flames in the 1981 NHL draft. The Flames left Vernon in junior hockey during the 1981-1982 season and he earned selection to the WHL All-Star team. In 1982-1983 he spent most of his time with the CHL's Colorado Flames. In 1984, he returned to the Calgary Flames but suffered a loss and returned to the CHL. Vernon won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. In 1994 Vernon was traded to the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit thought that Vernon would help teach their younger goaltender Chris Osgood, and was Detroit's best goaltender in 1994-1995. In 1995 Vernon helped Detroit get the President Trophy. Also in 1995 Detroit got to the Stanley Cup finals but lost to the New Jersey Devils. Osgood began to get better as the Detroit goaltender and became their primary goalie in 1995-1996. Vernon and Osgood shared the William M. Jenning Trophy. Detroit traded Vernon to the San Hose Sharks in 1997. Vernon played two full seasons with the Sharks but was traded in 1999 to the Florida Panthers. He played 34 games with this team but was soon traded back to the Flames. He played a few seasons with the Flames and was named one of the best goaltenders in that era. He played for the Boston Bruins, California Golden Seals, Philadelphia Flyers and the Detroit Red Wings. Leach was originally drafted by Boston in 1970. He played two seasons with them but was traded along with Rick Smith and Bob Stewart to California. After playing three seasons with California, Leach was traded to Philadelphia for Larry Wright, Al MacAdam and Ron Chipperfield in 1974. Leach won the Stanley Cup with Philadelphia in the 1974-75 season. After a few seasons with Philadelphia, Leach played his last season with the Red Wings then retired. Leach's best season was 1975-1976 with the Flyers. He set a career high with 61 goals 91 points and 11 game winning goals. His 61 goals won Leach what is now known as the Richard Trophy and he also won the Conn Smythe Trophy that season. During his career, Leach scored 381 goals 285, assists and 666 points in 934 career games. Leach was inducted into the Philadelphia Flyers Hall of Fame in 1992. He was first drafted by the Rangers in 1981 but played for their minor affiliate the Tulsa Oilers. Vanbiesbrouck’s first official season with the Rangers was 1984-85. That year Vanbiesbrouck won a Vezina Trophy and was a First Team All-Star the next season. In 1993, Vanbiesbrouck was traded to the Florida Panthers and was a huge factor in the Panthers winning the Stanley Cup in 1996. While with Florida, Vanbiesbrouck recorded his 300th career victory, becoming the fifteenth goalie to do so and the second American goalie. Vanbiesbrouck also played on an international level with the United States many times. He played in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in 1982 and played at four IIHF World Championships. Vanbiesbrouck also played in two Canada Cups. After his career, Vanbiesbrouck took over as the manager and head coach of the Greyhounds and in 2013 became the general manager of the United States Hockey League's Muskegon Lumberjacks. Learn More About Cam Neely: Cam Neely was a right winger that was drafted into the NHL by the Vancouver Canucks in 1983, ninth overall. He played 3 seasons with the Canucks before being traded to the Boston Bruins. Neely joining the Bruins was turning point in his career where he was given more opportunity to play and a chance to contribute offensively, not just physically. His first full season following the trade, Neely led the club with 36 goals and finishing the season with 72 points, more than doubling his previous year’s performance. Neely’s success stemmed from not only his quick, powerful shots on goal but his also his physical play and devastating body checks. He became a power forward for the Bruins and earned the nickname “Bam-Bam Cam.” His first season with the Bruins ended with 143 minutes in the penalty box. Sadly, Neely’s career was cut short due to repeated knee injuries and a degenerative hip condition at the age of 31. However, he did have some remarkable scoring achievements. Only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull scored a better goals per game average over the course of a season. He reached the 50 goal mark 3 times and played in 5 All-Star Games. His intense effort to return to the NHL despite the injuries earned him a Masterson Trophy and the Boston Bruins honored him by raising his number 8 to the rafters on January 12, 2004.

He spent two seasons with the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Springfield Kings, before having a brief stint in the big leagues in 1971 and winning the Calder Cup. Smith was drafted to the New York Islanders in the 1972 NHL Expansion Draft; he was chosen 2nd by the team. For two seasons, he shared goaltending duties with Gerry Desjardins before maintaining it alone and leading his team to the playoffs in 1974-1975. In 1978 Smith was named MVP after the All-Star Game. For the rest of the 1970’s he was a part of one of the greatest goaltending duos in the league at the time with Glenn Resch. During the 1980 playoff series, Smith cemented his standing as the starting goalie after leading the way to the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins for the team. Billy Smith won the Vezina Trophy and became a First Team All-Star in 1982 and won the William M. Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. Smith was also credited as being the first goalie to score an NHL goal. He retired in 1989 and was the only original Islander left on the team at that point. His number (31) was retired on February 20th, 1993, and he became the only goalie to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame during the 1990’s later in that year.
