Federov could do it all: he had superior speed, excellent puck handling skills and was a gifted playmaker. He normally played as a forward but also could play defense if needed. He began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings in 1990. He very quickly became a fan favorite with his extraordinary skills and high scoring. The 1993-1994 season was a career season for Federov where he scored 56 goals and 120 points. In the mid-nineties, Detroit coach Scotty Bowman put Federov on the Russian Five line with Vyacheslav Kozlov and Igor Larionov as wingers and Slava Fetisov and Vladimir Konstantinov on defence. This highly effective line essential shut down the opposing teams’ offense and they played a leading role in the three Red Wings Stanley Cup Championships in 1997, 1998 and 2002. Sergei Federov won numerous NHL awards including the Hart Memorial Trophy for MVP (1994), the Lester B. Pearson Award, the Frank J. Selke Trophy and three Presidents Trophies with Detroit. Under Plante’s guidance, Parent became a better and more proficient goalie as he perfected the “stand-up style” he modeled after Plante. Bernie Parent left the Leafs to join the WHA and returned to the Philadelphia Flyers after just one season. His next two years in Philly proved to be the best of his career. He won back to back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975 along with the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender and the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in both seasons. Sadly, Bernie Parent’s career was cut short in 1979 when he took a stick to his right eye causing temporary blindness. Although his vision returned, there was permanent damage to his eye forcing his retirement. Parent remained with the Flyers for a number of years as goaltending coach. His first two years in the NHL were played with the Detroit Red Wings before a trade for Terry Sawchuk landed Bucyk in a Bruins uniform in 1957. He became part of the Uke Line with fellow Canadian-Ukranian born players Vic Stasiuk and Bronco Horvath who were his linemates on the Junior Edmonton Oil Kings. Johnny Bucyk set numerous records with the Bruins although some have since been surpassed by Ray Bourque including most seasons, most games, goals, assists and points. Bucyk ended his career as the 4th leading goal scorer in NHL history at the time with 545 goals. He appeared in seven All-Star Games and was the recipient of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship and the Lester B. Pearson Award for his contribution to hockey. In his first season as captain of the Maple Leafs, he finished the season with 41 goals and 59 assists, the first Leaf ever to reach the one-hundred-point level. In the Canada Cup that year, he scored the winning goal for Team Canada in overtime. Sittler also set an NHL record for most points in one game which still stands. Due to a breakdown in communication with ownership and management of the Maple Leafs, Sittler requested to be traded. In 1982 he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers where he played one season. Lanny McDonald is a retired NHL winger that spent 16 seasons playing professional hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and the Calgary Flames. During his career, McDonald scored 500 goals and accumulated over 1000 points. The offensive forward had 3 consecutive 40 goal seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs before he was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1979. The deal was met with fan protests outside Maple Leaf Gardens. Lanny McDonald was named captain of the Rockies where he only played in one full season before he was again traded. This time he went to his hometown Calgary Flames where he would play for the rest of his career. Playing for the Calgary Flames, Lanny McDonald had some of the best years of his career. The 1982-83 season saw McDonald battling Wayne Gretzky for top goal scorer in the league. He finished the season with 66 goals, just 5 goals behind superstar Gretzky’s total of 71. His 66 goals still stand as highest number of goals in a single season for the Calgary Flames organization. He received the Bill Masterson Trophy for “perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.” He ended his career on a high note, winning the Stanley Cup in 1989.
