Vachon entered the NHL as backup goaltender for the Canadiens but his playoff success ensured him a spot on the team roster. Vachon went on to win the Vezina Trophy with teammate Gump Worsley the following season as the lead the team to two back to back Stanley Cup Championships in 1968 and 1969 and a third in 1971. Hextall is a third generation NHL player-the grandson of Hall of Famer Bryan Hextall (NY Rangers) and son of Bryan Hextall Jr. who played in the NHL for 10 seasons, mainly for the Pittsburgh Penguins. His uncle, Dennis Hextall spent 14 seasons in the NHL. Ron Hextall brought a new style of goaltending to the NHL because he liked to come out of the net and play the puck, lending support to his team’s defensemen. Hextall was also a very aggressive goalie which lead to three suspensions of 6 or more games throughout his career. He had more than 100 penalty minute in each of his first three seasons and set NHL records for penalty minutes by a goaltender. Hextall was an excellent stick handler and became the first NHL goalie to score a goal, not once but twice, once against the Bruins on an empty net and again against the Capitals. Ron Hextall played his first four NHL seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. A combination of injures and suspensions let Hextall to be traded to the Quebec Nordiques in 1992 as part of the Eric Lindros trade when Lindros refused to play for the Nordiques who drafted him first overall in the 1991 Entry Draft. Hextall helped the Nordiques reach the playoffs and was again traded the following season to the New York Islander where he played one season before being sent back to the Flyers. Hextall helped the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup Finals. At the end of the 1998-1998 season, Hextall was waived by the Flyers and went undrafted in the expansion draft. He announced his retirement on September 6, 1999. In 1988, Tom Barrasso was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins where he provided the defence needed to win two successive Stanley Cup Championships in 1991 and 1992. He became the first American born NHL goalie to win 300 games and finished his career with 369 wins. For the remainder of his career, Tom Barrasso played for the Ottawa Senators, Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues. He signed a pro forma contract with Pittsburgh so he could official retire as a Penguin in 2003. After retirement, Barrasso was a goaltending coach and later an assistant coach for the Carolina Hurricanes. He is currently a head coach in Italy. He was the only goalie to go directly into the NHL without any college, major junior or professional experience. In his rookie year, he won both the Vezina Trophy as the leagues’ best netminder and the Calder Trophy as top rookie. He was also elected to the first All-Star Team. Learn More about Vic Hadfield: Vic Hadfield made it to the NHL as a rugged enforcer for the New York Rangers in 1959. He posted triple digit penalty numbers and led the league in 1963-1964 with 151 penalty minutes. As Hadfield’s career progressed with the Rangers, he was put on the same line with Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert. This line would become known as the Goal a Game line and Hadfield’s focuses shifted scoring. Vic Hadfield was an example of one player doing it all as his points totals came closer to matching his penalty minutes. In 1971-1972, he had his career best season with 50 goals, 106 points and 142 PIM. He became captain of the New York Rangers the following season and was also chosen to play in the 1972 Summit Series.
