He played for the New York Americans and the New York Rangers. Originally, Rayner played for the Kenora Thistles in the Manitoba Junior League. The year after that he turned professional and played for the Americans however he spent most of his time on the affiliate team the Springfield Indians of the AHL. When Rayner was with the Indians he led the league in shutouts and goals against average. He was named to the Second All-Star Team. The next season, Rayner was the leading goalie for the Americans final season but then World War II started, and the Americans folded. Rayner spent the next three years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He played two seasons there with the teams based out of Victoria. After the war, Rayner signed as a free agent with the Rangers in 1945. Rayner was the starter goalie in six of the seven next seasons. Although Rayner hadn't set any goals he was still one of the best goalies of his era. 1948-51 were his best seasons as he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's MVP in 1950 after leading the Rangers to overtime in the seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals. He became a regular with the Red Wings in the 1988-1989 season, only scoring 7 goals in 56 games but also amassing 60 penalty minutes. His tenure in Detroit was short lived as he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in November 1989. He was part of “the Kid line” alongside Martin Gelinas and Joe Murphy who helped the Oilers with their 5th Stanley Cup in 7 seasons. Adam Graves was signed by the New York Rangers as a free agent for the 1991-1992 season. He was asked to fulfill the role as a two-way forward as he had during his highly successful junior career. The 1987-1988 season was the first of six 40 plus point seasons for Lafontaine. In the 1987 Stanley Cup division finals, LaFontaine scored the game winning goal in the 4th period of overtime against the Washington Capitals in game seven that was dubbed the “Easter Epic”. LaFontaine was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in October 1991 and during his second season with the Sabres, set a team record with 148 points. The potential hockey superstar suffered several career setbacks including concussions, a broken jaw and an injured knee. He was awarded the Bill Masterson Trophy at the end of the 1995 season for his determination and perseverance. He was traded to the New York Rangers but a series of concussions only saw Pat Lafontaine appear in 62 games. He retired at the end of the season with 468 goals and 1013 points. The Sabres retired his number 16 in 2006 and LaFontaine was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003. Playing on frozen ponds in his native Calgary until after nightfall, Bill Gadsby left home at the age of 17 to pursue a career on the ice. He got his lucky break when Chicago Blackhawks scout, Bill Tobin, discovered the talented defenseman and offered him a contract. After only 12 games in the minors, Gadsby made it to the NHL at the age of 18. In his debut game, he got a cut to the face that took 12 stitches to close. He played for the New York Americans and the New York Rangers. Originally, Rayner played for the Kenora Thistles in the Manitoba Junior League. He showed his potential by backstopping the team into getting a Memorial Cup. The year after that he turned professional and played for the Americans however he spent most of his time on the affiliate team the Springfield Indians of the AHL. When Rayner was with the Indians he led the league in shutouts and goals against average. He was named to the Second All-Star Team. The next season, Rayner was the leading goalie for the Americans final season but then World War II started, and the Americans folded. Rayner spent the next three years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He played two seasons there with the teams based out of Victoria. After the war, Rayner signed as a free agent with the Rangers in 1945. Rayner was the starter goalie in six of the seven next seasons. Although Rayner hadn't set any goals he was still one of the best goalies of his era. 1948-51 were his best seasons as he won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's MVP in 1950 after leading the Rangers to overtime in the seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals. Chuck Rayner was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973. Learn more about Johnny Bower: Johnny Bower played a large part of his hockey career in the minor leagues with a brief stint in for the New York Rangers before becoming the Toronto Maple Leafs’ starting goaltender. He played for Toronto from 1958-59 season to 1969-70 and was nicknamed the China Wall for his solid goaltending at an older age. Johnny Bower played for Toronto for 11 seasons, bringing home 3 Consecutive Stanley Cup victories in 1962, 1963 and 1964. He would win one more Stanley Cup in 1967, with tandem goaltender Terry Sawchuk, with whom he shared the Vezina trophy for best goaltender. Johnny Bower would receive many awards and honors after his retirement from hockey in 1970.
